wicd MIA

wicd apparently starts, but neither the tray icon or gui will.

$ $(locate tray.py)
attempting to connect daemon...
daemon not running...
You need to start the daemon before using the gui or tray.  Use the command 'sudo /etc/init.d/wicd start'.

I really mangled my system somehow recently--after several fscks with
a live cd and some messing around, I'm back, but not everything is
acting quite the way it's supposed to. I think installing daemontools
was the culprit--but I digress.

Any ideas?
