Thank you, fwojciec, for the tips.  As you can see, I've gained some inspiration here. wink

Also, the panel pictured here is lxpanel - it's much lighter - trying to keep everything down to more of a minimum.  The font bugs in urxvt are also fixed!  I'm now a convert wink
