problem with iwlwifi-3945

Hi all. I'm on a Dell Inspiron 6400, having an intel 3945abg card for wifi. i'm using the iwlwifi-3945-ucode drivers.
Though the interface wlan0 assigns itself an ip on bootup, I'm not able to open up any application after it does so. For instance, trying to open firefox just displays a "Starting firefox" in the bottom panel, and then dies out. Opening it from the terminal gives me an error message saying something like : no display connected 0:0 .
Moreover, if I switch on the wifi after I've logged in, I have to go through all the ifconfig/iwconfig/iwlist/dhcpcd routine. Any idea what's wrong?

Re: problem with iwlwifi-3945

The problem with Firefox sounds more like you're trying to run it as root.   I used to get a similar error if I did that.

I don't think it's related to your wireless card.   Not sure what the wireless problem is, though.

That's normal unless you use something like NetworkManager
which autodetects that the wifi has been turned on and connects
to the net. If you use netcfg2 then you won't have to type so
many things all the time (just sudo netcfg2 profile-name)
