Hi there,

i am trying to get a Realteak 8187 USB Wlan stick running. I followed the WIKI entry and everything works so far, but it doesnt detect any of the various networks around me...

Some Info:

Re: [solved] No networks detected with Realtek 8187 Wireless USB

Update: Ndiswrapper seems to work with this card, at least i can see some networks etc... However, i cannot connect to any of these networks, and because of the headache this thing has caused so far, i will give it back and get some better hardware...

It looks to me that you are not getting an IP address from the access point.
Are the "networks around you"  'open' networks?
If they are not, you will not get an address without the correct ESSID and authentication, in spite of the fact that you will be able to "see" them.

Yes, thats the point. I can see my AP (Linksys WRT54GL) with iwlist scan and its DHCP server is also working properly (tested on laptop with intel WLAN), but once i try to connect to it, i get no IP address... (WICD just hangs at "Getting IP Address")

No, they are all WEP encrypted and i have configured WPA2.... Hm, i just tried to disable encryption on my AP and... it works! However, when using WEP, WPA or WPA2, it hangs like described above...

Even if i provide correct authentification and ESSID (Just a matter of choosing my network in WICD and providing the password), it still hangs when getting the IP Adress...

Post your config files. It may be that  your TIMEOUT is too short.
That happened to me with my access point at home and I had to increase the TIEMOUT=50 in /etc/network.d/yourconfigfile

p.s. are you using netcfg2? If  you are not you should.  wink

Sorry, i hadnt much time over the last days, so this thing got a new schedule smile

Well, i have replaced the USB-stick with an Intel based card and its working now... I guess it was ndiswrapper or something that didnt like the other chipset...

Now i try netcfg2 smile

Glad to hear you are moving forward with your network.
You may want to "mark" this thread 'solved' by adding those words to the title of your original post.

Re: [solved] No networks detected with Realtek 8187 Wireless USB

i've got the same problem for realtek 8187... i get the same output as funkyou's first post. the stick seems to be not turned on...

the wireless network is working, tested with another computer.

wlan_profile in /etc/network.d (changed the ESSID and KEY)

CONNECTION="wireless"
DESCRIPTION="A simple WEP encrypted wireless connection"
INTERFACE=wlan0
SCAN="yes"
SECURITY="wep"
ESSID="the_name_of_my_network"
KEY="the_key"
IP="dhcp"

and /etc/rc.conf

lo="127.0.0.1"
eth0="dhcp"
INTERFACES=(lo wlan0)

if i netcfg2 wlan_profile, then i get

:: wlan_profile up - Network unavailable

can anyone help?

Re: [solved] No networks detected with Realtek 8187 Wireless USB

The only way I could make RTL8187 (on my subnotebook) to work reliably, was with ndiswrapper and the w98 driver (not the XP one, which is very unstable).
