I am using Gentoo for quite a while but I am now experimenting with Archlinux.
I did a straightforward AMD64 install but there are a couple of things that do not work:
1. My LCD screen measures 1280x1024 and is indicated as such in xorg.conf (no other modes given). But "at random", when rebooting (via KDM) or when starting the X-server from the command line, I get a 1280x780 resolution (that I cannot change to 1280x1024). Any idea what may cause this?
2. Multimedia: I have sound when starting or closing KDE and with Dragon, I can play individual .flac files. But neither Juk (for my collection of .flac music) and KsCD (for a CD) gives any sound. They both indicate that they are playing but even with volume turned completely up, no sound. I have installed all gstreamer plugins and made gstreamer my prefered backend to phonon. Any ideas?

Forgotten 3rd problem
Dragon does not recognise a dvd (no media loaded), nor a cd (idem)

kdvgent,
Could you post your xorg.conf? and when it starts w/ the wrong resolution the /var/log/Xorg.0.log?
You can force xorg to use defined resolutions by disabling edid in the xorg.conf monitor section.

Are you using HAL? Try commenting any entries in /etc/fstab that reference your CD / DVD drive(s). They can interfere with HAL sometimes
