hi guys. i im a newbie, switched to linux from windows from a suggestion of a friend. (i have a celeron, nvidia videocard) the 1st time i ran startx, fluxbox started, and gave me vc1 (the command line), but when i startxed again, and exited, the screen went blank and thats whats happening all the time when i start an x thing. so far it happened when i ran the test server, xterm, fluxbox, and xorgcfg. when i exit, i can type su reboot and it reboots, so it has to be a moniter problem. weird thing is, i previously had gentoo installed (switch cuz it was too much of a headache) and gnome worked. brought me to vc1 w/ any problem when i exited. i dont know what the freak is going on. please help!

Are you using any DM or just the .xinitrc to start up X?
If you are new to Linux, like you say, maybe using a DM (gdm or kdm or slim) might be a better option
