Yeah conky is ok if you want to see it all teh time, it can get messy if you have alot of info going on.

not really, depends on setting
of course, some sensors might kill your cpu if overused
usually my 3 sessions of conky (yes, symultanously) don't get more than 0.5% of CPU

There is also lxtask under the LXDE environment. No additional dependencies. Pretty alright, although not as fancy as the gnome one.

It doesn't have to be placed on the desktop. I'm actually currently working on getting a config that is more in line with gnome's monitor than with most conky configs (though of course I'm limited because I can't have tabs). I'll post it here when I finish it, and maybe update this post if I remember to.
