I recently bought a Linksys N router. I have a problem with recent disconnects. When I'm on Xbox Live trying to play COD4, it seems like every 10 minutes or so I disconnect completely from all internet. It's very annoying. I know you can put linux on Linksys routers, and I'm wondering if that could be a possible fix for the disconnecting issue?
Edit: forgot to mention that I'm using a wired connection on the router

I have this problem with linksys wrt54gx4. What is your router model? Check if it is supported by these softwares:

Mine router isn't supported , and what I did do make it better was to manually try each wireless channel and stay with the best. I also tried to keep it as default as possible.

After reading you are wired, you could try to shorten the keep alive period (depending on your Internet Connection Type - I think default is 30 sec and it is fine) and make the Xbox IP static in order to set it as DMZ

No that isn't my model, I have the WRT150N. I figured paying almost 100 dollars for a router would be the better way to go, but apparently not. It's also not just the xbox that's having a problem. I pretty much quit my wow career because I would constaintly lag out every 5 minutes. I'll definately look into the keep alive period and set my xbox to static. Thanks for the tips

If it still doesn't work as it should you could try flashing it to DD-WRT firmware -- I think your router is supported, though it may depend on the version.

I put DD-WRT on it, but as soon as i started a cod4 game I got disconnected :\

What is your ISP? Comcast? Maybe you need to set up something like MAC address cloning on the router or something...

Yes, comcast. I really don't like them, but they bought out my old ISP, and there aren't a lot of options around here.
Is there an easy way to do that?

Well, on my setup I have to make my router pretend that it is the network card of the computer on which the service was initially set up to even get it to work. Apparently Comcast tries to "subtly discourage" sharing internet connection among multiple computers. There should be a MAC Address Clone tab in the Setup part of DD-WRT control panel... It's should be pretty self explanatory, google comcast + mac address clone for more info.
Another idea... The comcast technician that was in my house told me that the cable connection tends to be unreliable if the coax cable going to the modem is too long -- it should be as short as possible. Does it work better if you plug directly into the cable modem? Also, maybe you could try using a different ethernet cable.

My linksys has a MAC Address Clone page under Setup tab. Just copy the MAC address of your ISP modem there (If you're lucky, you'll find it printed on the modem).
Maybe you should turn modem and router off and on again.

Another idea... You could try increasing TCP and UDP timeouts on the router as well. Maybe xbox is bad at keeping connection alive and times out...

You really should start at layer 1 - physical connection.
Verify all of your cables are in good condition. Reseat the ends, check for kinks, etc.
More often than not issues like this are duplex mismatches because of a faulty cable.
After that if you still experience problems try some pings.
Ping the IP of your router, typically 192.168.1.1 for a Linksys (it will be whatever your default gateway is).
At the same time run a ping to www.yahoo.com (209.131.36.158 is one of their IPs if your DNS is not working).
If your losing packets to 192.168.1.1 then you've definately got a faulty cable or router.
If your pings to the router are good but to yahoo fail, then you've got a faulty cable between the router and modem, a faulty modem, or a faulty ISP. At this point, try calling their customer support (I know it's like pulling teeth with comcast), but they can at least run some basic diagnostics.
