Via 82XX modem in laptop works with KDE but not Gnome

sad I'm running two Arch installations on an ESys E320 laptop with a VIA C3 CPU:

1) Arch (last fully updated about a month ago) with KDE 3.5.9:
kernel 2.6.25-ARCH
slmodem 2.9.11-41
alsa-lib & alsa-utils 1.0.16-1

2) Arch (bang up to date) with Gnome:
kernel 2.6.26-ARCH
slmodem 2.9.11-42
alsa-lib & alsa-utils 1.0.16-1

On 1), the internal Via 82XX modem (which works via the slmodem package + alsa) is found as /dev/ttySL0 by both KPPP and wvdialconf, and it talks nicely to the internet using both KPPP and wvdial.

On 2), the modem appears to be found by wvdialconf (or via gnome-ppp) as /dev/ttySL0, but not by KPPP. When I try to connect to the internet with wvdial and gnome-ppp, it always gives a NO DIALTONE error - despite the telephone line being working. (If I change the ATZ initialisation to ATX3, it just times out.) Here's the output from wvdial:

# wvdial
--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60
--> Cannot get information for serial port.
--> Initializing modem.
--> Sending: ATZ
ATZ
OK
--> Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
OK
--> Modem initialized.
--> Idle Seconds = 180, disabling automatic reconnect.
--> Sending: ATDT08456041528
--> Waiting for carrier.
ATDT08456041528
NO DIALTONE
--> No dial tone.
--> Disconnecting at Tue Aug 26 18:26:06 2008

I've tinkered with lots of settings and found many people with unresolved "no dialtone" problems on many forums, all to no avail. However, I did find something which makes me suspect that the "no dialtone" message may be a red herring, and maybe the modem isn't being detected properly at all on 2) - see bold text:

$ aplay -l  # on 1)

I'd be most grateful for any assistance in solving this frustrating problem!

Re: Via 82XX modem in laptop works with KDE but not Gnome

I've just found out that the modem works fine with the GUI dialer which fronts wvdial in Puppy 4.00.
So, it's the current version of Arch + Gnome which is causing me the hassle!
