new to openbox

Hi All,
I'm trying openbox again and so far i really like it, the Openbox topic in Artwork was a good source of insperation,
i do have a couple of questions

could i make my own versions of desklet type things to sit on the background? using python? without the need for gdesklets etc? just a stand alone script?
is there a good GUI text editor, I don't mind using nano vi etc but i've not worked out copy and paste in these yet.

i've checked the openbox wiki which was very helpfull but a limited number of apps that they sugest,

Thanks
Matthew

Re: new to openbox

For text editing i use Mousepad , or you can use geany.
As for writing a app like a screenlet , i spose you could depending on how good your programming skills are.

Also the task bar he's using is tint, up in the top right. I'm pretty sure, anyways.

You can see that task bar here, looks like the same shape, right?

Where did you get that screenshot, btw? I really love his conky, wondering if he has the config for it :]

Re: new to openbox

big_smile You found one of my screenshots

In the lower right is moc (music on console) inside a urxvt (Terminal) with transparent background.
In the lower left is mcabber (console jabber-client) inside a urxvt, too.
The panel is tint as Blice said.

I found my conky-rc inside another old thread. Here they are: conky-time-rc, conky-res-rc, conky-sys-rc, conky-net-rc
started with conky -c config-file (in the .xinitrc)

Geany is a nice, fast program to use in Openbox.
As programs in Openbox I use (additional to that said before) xarchiver, bashburn, gpicview, epdfview, pcmanfm, opera and some others.
If you like some Eye-Candy, xcompmgr and wbar are nice.

If you want a full functional, lightweight, easy DE with Openbox, try LXDE.

Actually I switched to compiz-fusion after about a half year with openbox
(just to try something else without leaving Arch wink )
