network problem

I just installed arch-linux (0.7) on my new pc.
All went well, I got base installed from cd and it detected all my hardware.
But the problem is that network freezes after a while and can't get it up until I reboot.
Even unloadin and reloading module doesn't help.
I'm using integrated  card on ga-k8n (some realtek card) that uses module 8139too. And that should be right, because the same module works perfectly on gentoo and fedora.

Also I tried putting in an 3com 3c980c card and the results are same.
Works fine for awhile and then nothing.

Really disturbing. I just have to use windows until this is resolved...

Any ideas?

Re: network problem

You seem to know your way around, but I just have to ask if you have looked at things like:

ifconfig
netstat
dmesg
log files in /var/log
Also, try pinging an IP (ie  ping 216.239.57.99) to see if it is maybe a dns problem.

Re: network problem

Well like I said nothing wrong in boot, so dmesg is clean,
but I forget to look errorlog and found it says this:

shpchp: shpc_init: shpc_cap_offset==0

Tried google and I think it got something to do with hotplug.
Anyone know better?

Maybe I'll try disabling hotplug and configuring modules myself.

Re: network problem

Ok. Now I tried to disable hotplug and manualy configure modules, but with same results. Except this time no errors in log.
That hotplug error must be something else.

So,I still have the same problem: network stays on for awhile and then freezes.

Re: network problem

Try another Linux kernel (older and/or newer). Are you sure that you don't have DHCP confusing anything or something like that?

Re: network problem

I tried older arch-linux kernels, but they didn't work any better.
I also tried to compile kernel with

CONFIG_X86_64=y
CONFIG_64BIT=y

(because I have amd64, so thought that might solve the problem) but no luck.

Then I downloaded fedora kernel (for x86_64) and tried it - works just fine.
So what I did next was to take config file from fedoras kernel and used it to make new kernel26 package with abs. Now at last I have a working network.
