nm-applet keeps asking for password - have read wiki.

Hi,

nm-applet keeps asking me for a password for my wireless network even though I followed the instructions on the NetworkManger page on the Arch wiki. The message in the password dialogue is as follows:

The application 'nm-applet' (/usr/bin/nm-applet) wants access to the default keyring, but it is locked

Which I thought was strange because I don't have a keyring called default. It does not ask me if I want the password to be unlocked automatically like the wiki says.

Here's my /etc/pam.d/gdm:

#%PAM-1.0
auth requisite pam_nologin.so
auth required pam_env.so
auth required pam_unix.so
auth optional pam_gnome_keyring.so
account required pam_unix.so
session required pam_limits.so
session required pam_unix.so
session optional pam_gnome_keyring.so auto_start
password required pam_unix.so
password optional pam_gnome_keyring.so

/etc/pam.d/passwd:

#%PAM-1.0
#password required pam_cracklib.so difok=2 minlen=8 dcredit=2 ocredit=2 retry=3
#password required pam_unix.so md5 shadow use_authtok
password required pam_unix.so md5 shadow nullok
password optional pam_gnome_keyring.so

My keyrings:

$ ls -l .gnome2/keyrings/
total 4
-rw------- 1 nick nick 454 2008-07-25 09:16 login.keyring

The login keyring is set to the location for application passwords in the "Password and Encryption" settings in gnome.

Thanks for any help.

Re: nm-applet keeps asking for password - have read wiki.

i have
/etc/pam.d/gdm:

#%PAM-1.0
auth requisite pam_nologin.so
auth required pam_env.so
auth required pam_unix.so
auth optional pam_gnome_keyring.so
account required pam_unix.so
session required pam_limits.so
session required pam_unix.so
session optional pam_gnome_keyring.so auto_start
password required pam_unix.so

you have one line that i don't have.

/etc/pam.d/passwd:

#%PAM-1.0
#password required pam_cracklib.so difok=2 minlen=8 dcredit=2 ocredit=2 retry=3
#password required pam_unix.so md5 shadow use_authtok
password required pam_unix.so md5 shadow nullok
password optional pam_gnome_keyring.so

and /etc/pam.d/gnome-screensaver:

#%PAM-1.0

# Fedora Core
#auth include system-auth
#account include system-auth
#password include system-auth
#session include system-auth

# SuSE/Novell
#auth include common-auth
#account include common-account
#password include common-password
#session include common-session

# Arch Linux
auth required pam_unix_auth.so
auth optional pam_gnome_keyring.so

that are the configuration and for me is working

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

Re: nm-applet keeps asking for password - have read wiki.

That is one of the reasons I stopped using it.
I don't use gdm either

Re: nm-applet keeps asking for password - have read wiki.

Has anyone found a way to unlock the keychain on login without using gdm? - I'm using slim too.

Re: nm-applet keeps asking for password - have read wiki.

The same to me, I can't unblock the keyring and asks for the password over and over. Maybe its some permissions issue?

Re: nm-applet keeps asking for password - have read wiki.

I had the same problem. Having installed seahorse 2.22.3 I could tick the box "automatic unlock after login" after the login. Since then I feel so free.
