Could someone please try if the subtitles function in VLC 0.9.3 is working? Mine doesn't.

Check the Preferences, Subtitles & OSD, and the Font. I believe it is being set to a font that doesn't exist in a default Arch Linux system. I found some good fonts under here : /usr/share/fonts/TTF
