[Solved] Anyone got gnome-user-share to work?

Hi,

I'm looking for simple per-user file sharing on linux, and gnome-user-share seems quite nice. Unfortunately, there is next to no documentation available... I've tried quite hard to make it work, installed avahi, apache and everything, but it fails on startup with the following error:

error spawning httpd: Failed to execute child process "" (No such file or directory)
spawning httpd failed

Did anyone get it to work? How?

I usually run nautilus-share.
Sorry i can't help you with gnome-user-share, but the error you are getting is apache related. Check /var/log/httpd.log (or maybe /var/log/apache or something like that).

It isn't specifically apache only, but it does give you some hints on how to get apache set up correctly.

thanks for the answer! Nothing in the apache logs, i don't think it even gets there. BTW I tried removing apache from my system, and I get the same error message. I also get the same message if apache is started.

Anyways, if nobody answers I think I'm going to give up. Do you use nautilus-share with Samba?

Yep, that's what it's for. Works great!
You can of course use gsambad from AUR, but then you can't right click in nautilus and share, and you have to run it as a privileged user.
nautilus-share has a few quirks as well, such as shared folder you delete or move, doesn't go away / change path. But, you can delete "old" shares easily with "net usershare delete <name>".
I'm sure that'll get fixed with time...

I've installed nautilus-share, and I succesfully shared some directories. I can see them in the "windows network" dialog. The only problem is that I cannot mount them, I get the following error message:

Failed to mount Windows share

Did you by any chance run into that issue?

Maybe you should allow "guest access" to that share?
This probably has to do with the setup of your samba server, not nautilus.
"Guest acces" works even when samba is in "user" security mode.

Samba runs in two modes, one is "user" mode, the other one is "share" mode. When in "user" mode, you need to provide a login+password to access a share. You can do that by adding a samba user (you actually add an existing local account as a samba accout, and give it a password).
In "share" mode, all users can gain access unless specifically denied.

I solved it, it was actually a problem of filesystem permissions. It should definitely warn you in some way when one directory of the path doesn't have the "x" permission
