Can't run graphic interface [SOLVED]

I'm new to Arch and I can't get the visual stuff to work.
I installed xorg and openbox, however, when I run xinit as root it correctly shows a cross and a Xterm, but when I do it as a normal user the screen blinks once and returns to text mode.

I get this errors when i type "xinit" either as root or normal user:

X.Org X Server 1.4.2

The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:

Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/TTF, removing from list!
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/Type1, removing from list!

waiting for X server to shut down FreeFontPath: FPE "/usr/share/fonts/misc:unscaled" refcount is 2, should be 1; fixing.

I use portuguese as my system language.

How can I run the graphical interface without being root and how do I correct all those errors?

Thanks in advance,
Alberto

Re: Can't run graphic interface [SOLVED]

Do you have a DW/WM set in your non root user's xinitrc file?

Re: Can't run graphic interface [SOLVED]

The keymap is wrong, so change that, also, install some ttf fonts.

About fonts, which ones do you recommend? I would also like to have nice console fonts, I loved the boot sequence from this guy, how does he do this?:http://br.youtube.com/watch?v=xK6mNjmXr … re=related

FYI, don't use quote tags when posting code. Rather, use the code tags.
Fixed it for you. wink

Re: Can't run graphic interface [SOLVED]

Did you change the keymap and installed some ttf fonts, like I suggested?

Re: Can't run graphic interface [SOLVED]

I have already installed all fonts necessary.
Also, I have changed the keymap to "pt-latin9.map.gz" according to this page
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/KEYMAP
but it still says that it hasn't been found :s ??

But still I believe that even if I find the correct keymap it won't work because I can run xinit as root, my problem is running it as a normal user, the screen flashes once in a black color and then it goes back to the console:(

Re: Can't run graphic interface [SOLVED]

The link you posted is about setting the keymap in the virtual consoles, it has nothing to do with X.  Try setting

Option "XkbLayout" "pt"

in your xorg.conf

Also, check that your normal user has a valid .xinitrc file.

Re: Can't run graphic interface [SOLVED]

Thanks a lot, I've set .xinitrc to:

exec xterm

Now I can launch it as a normal user big_smile

I can instead of exec xterm put "exec openbox"?

I mean, Can I use openbox alone (without gnome, xfce,...)?
Because when I run it it says:

Openbox-Message: Couldn't set locale from environment.
openbox: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libxml2.so.2: undefined symbol: gzopen64

And about the keymap, the error now is:

Warning: Type "ONE_LEVEL" has 1 levels, but <RALT> has 2 symbols
                     Ignoring extra symbols
Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server
Warning: locale not supported by C library, locale unchanged

waiting for X server to shut down FreeFontPath: FPE "/usr/share/fonts/misc:unscaled" refcount is 2, should be1; fixing
