well it is just a curiosity, right now i'm running windows, but i'm going install linux again, i just don't want spend all the time in command line waiting for the download of all the packages from the server and if there is a way to install linux from windows, without rebooting and using the internet with opera not links and listening music with winamp not aplay and using msn messenger not pebrot (well, i love pebrot but ...) it would be nice

hmm, normally the download of the required packages takes about, let's say 15 minutes.
great opportunity for toilet, coffee, something to eat and a quick phonecall.
after this...whooo, download finished.
edit: oh, i forgot...i listened to some music using my cd-player.

yeah, 15 minutes to download the core, it takes about 2.5 hours to download all the other stuff (read other stuff as kde )
thanks for the suggestion of ubuntu, but arch is so better (i tryed ubuntu before, and actually i have some trouble with ubuntu and my laptop).
maybe i could install linux in a virtual machine and then copy it to the partition (i just don't want get locked at the command line again, i don't care if it takes more effort to install)

2.5 hours? uhhh, what's your connection?
last time when i had to deal with time like that i used gentoo and the programs needed this to compile.
i think you could install the packages from usb-stick.

If on a slow connection and do not want to wait for it to download those packages - just leave it overnight

You have one option here - don't use KDE but something lightweight, which doesn't pull 100s of MBs od dependencies, like *box, tiling manager...
And that stuff with the command line - I see it as a necessary purgatory after using win-do$

Just leave it overnight if you can, if you can't, perhaps move the pc to another room or something, you can also predownload the kde packages, burn them, and place them in /var/cache/pacman/. Here is the list of files for kde http://pastebin.com/m41d91785, and this is xorg http://pastebin.com/m17928448, will cut a lot of time.
If it ain't broke, broke it then fix it.

First install base, then X with a lightweight window manager (a *box) so you can run X apps.
Besides, if you stoped complaining, you would already have downloaded all you need.

Arch Linux's installation was by far the fastest out of all the distros that I have tried (well, to be fair, I also most recently installed it on the fastest computer I've ever had). I literally had everything up and running in the matter of minutes (fast internet connection). Personally, I have no need for the Windows-based installers; I prefer to get my hands dirty, so to speak.

Have you changed the pacman download server, you could be only downloading at 50kbs, whereas other servers allow faster download speeds?

I really don't like those answers consisting in "don't do it" when someone's asks a tricky question ! There are plenty of reasons to want to do a real archlinux installation directly from Windows, and I'm currently facing one. I'd like to install linux on my box that can't boot from CD nor USB. Having a way to install from Windows would be nice.
This should be possible easily in theory and there seems to be a generic documented way: http://marc.herbert.free.fr/linux/win2linstall.html
I'll try it and write something specific to archlinux if I succeed.

LiFo2, this thread is 3 years old. Things are quite different than they used to be 3 years ago. So the "don't do it" -- would have been probably valid then for a variety of reasons.
Bottom line -- Do not necrobump threads. Read forum rules. If you do succeed, I would suggest creating a wiki page to document it. Threads get lost. Wiki pages are easily accessible.
Closing...
There's no such thing as a stupid question, but there sure are a lot of inquisitive idiots !
