[SOLVED] -Syu & new kernel has made the internet unusable?

What is the easiest way to get my system back to where it was before today's -Syu?

As it is currently useless on the internet after the upgrade.

See this thread. Probably a dhcpcd issue.

Re: [SOLVED] -Syu & new kernel has made the internet unusable?

Most sites I try to access are time out, the ones that do make it take a long time.

I get this error in Firefox:

Connection Interrupted

The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.

The network link was interrupted while negotiating a connection.

Please try again.

Re: [SOLVED] -Syu & new kernel has made the internet unusable?

If I use pacman to install the kernel26-2.6.26.5-1-86_64.pkg.tar.gz

will pacman handle downgrading any relevant dependencies?

Or by installing the earlier kernel am I about to throw a huge spanner into my system causing breakages all over the place?

Re: [SOLVED] -Syu & new kernel has made the internet unusable?

I have installed the previous kernel, & the rt2500 catalyst e2fsprogs & dhcpcd packages, which are all that are mentioned in the pacman.log.

[Edit:]

The above failed on the first attempt due to my error.

Downgrading the kernel did fix the problem.

Re: [SOLVED] -Syu & new kernel has made the internet unusable?

When I do:

sudo /etc/rc.d/network restart

I get the following error:

/etc/rc.d/network: line 29: /sbin/dhcpcd: No such file or directory

The line 29 reads as follows:

/sbin/dhcpcd $DHCPCD_ARGS ${1}

I do hope someone can help me with this, I'm going to have to scrap Arch on this machine if I can't use the internet.

That will be two machines in two days. lol

I have gone as far as I can go without help.

The message "/sbin/dhcpcd: No such file or directory" if fairly clear....  Do you have dpcpcd installed.

Re: [SOLVED] -Syu & new kernel has made the internet unusable?

I upgraded, then downgraded, then reinstalled the current files again, today.

Which included dhcpcd.

Re: [SOLVED] -Syu & new kernel has made the internet unusable?

I just fired up Arch on that machine & reinstalled dhcpcd, & checked that I did reinstall the current versions of the other files too.

I now have an IP & an internet connection that times out on most sites before loading the page.  Which was my initial problem to start with.

So it looks as though I must have missed reinstalling dhcpcd, sorry about that, thanks for pointing me in that direction.

I still have useless internet, I'm back to the Connection Interupted Firefox error.  Though some sites will eventually make it, like www.whirlpool.net.au for example.

Re: [SOLVED] -Syu & new kernel has made the internet unusable?

you seem to have a similar or same problem as I (we) do:
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=57081

maybe you can shed some light on what internet connection you use? btw the problem is (most probably) not arch-related, i compiled all the 2.6.27-rcX vanilla kernels and all show the same symptoms.

cheers Barde

Re: [SOLVED] -Syu & new kernel has made the internet unusable?

There seems to be a bug in the kernel, downgrading seems to fix it for most people.

Re: [SOLVED] -Syu & new kernel has made the internet unusable?

downgrading dhcpcd worked for me: No problems anymore with connection under 2.6.26.5 or 2.6.27-git6.
So it does not seem like kernel bug?

Ah! So you made the internet unusable? I was already wondering who broke it.

Re: [SOLVED] -Syu & new kernel has made the internet unusable?

Downgrading dhcpcd did not work for me, only when the kernel was downgraded & dhcpcd did things work properly on my machine again. ?

Which caused me to tripple (at least) check the situation, resulting in:

I just upgraded my system again -Syu , rebooted & returned to a crippled internet.

I then removed dhcpcd & installed the previous version, rebooted & still had a crippled internet.

I then downgraded my kernel having to first remove the rt2500 package as it was the only dependency left.

After downgrading the kernel I have perfectly functioning internet again.

So to my simple mind it is a kernel bug.

Re: [SOLVED] -Syu & new kernel has made the internet unusable?

I am too having this problem and i can get to soem pages but they either load extremely slowly or not at all...  I've tried downgrading dhcpcd and still have the problem, i had recently done a pacman -Scc so i do nto have my older kernel package.  Where would i go about getting it and how can i install it?

I don't know where you can get it.

When you do if you put it where they normally go:  /usr/cache/pacman/pkg

Then you use:

sudo pacman -U /usr/cache/pacman/pkg/kernel26-2.6.26.5-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz

Or the 32bit one's name.

When you do this it will probably give you a file or two that you will also have to downgrade, or delete temporarily.

Re: [SOLVED] -Syu & new kernel has made the internet unusable?

would i be able to jsut get the kernel from www.kernel.org  and install it by compiling it?  If so would that screw up the dependency's?  How would i find out what these dependencies are so i can downrgrade them manually?

Re: [SOLVED] -Syu & new kernel has made the internet unusable?

I don't know if you will be able to get the source for the previous kernel at that site?

Yes I'm sure you can use what is called a vanilla kernel.  I don't believe it will cause you trouble, though there is only one way to find out. :-)

After you have your new kernel use the pacman -U comand as I posted previously, you will be told the names of files that you will have to downgrade, or in some cases you can just remove them if you don't use them anyway.

It is not very hard, as you will find out when you do it.

All the best with it.
