One playlist used to display "英雄" as the title, and now it's just "??". How do I fix this?

It may be an encoding issue. Make sure the encoding of the tags is UTF-8.

How would I check that? I tried changing the playlist name in ~/playlists/, but Sonata just shows weird characters now.

What's the locale of your system and file system?
Offline
I set it in rc.conf as en_AU.uft8, since I live in Australia for the time being. And in /etc/locale.gen I have
zh_CN.GB18030 GB18030
zh_CN.GBK GBK
zh_CN.UTF-8 UTF-8
zh_CN GB2312
uncommented as well.
EDIT: I also just noticed that the songs with Chinese words in the filename can't be read by Sonata or MPD as well. I think it might have something to do with me installing wqy-bitmapfont and wqy-zenhei

My locale is en_US.UTF-8 and sonata and mpd support international characters perfectly, including Chinese and Japanese. I am sorry that I am not quite sure about your problem but something seems to be wrong with your file system encoding. Or encoding related configuration of some software is wrong. However, I am quite sure it has nothing to do with the fonts you installed.

I agree with the fonts, but since I don't know where to start the diagnosis, it's as much of a lead than none.
Thanks for all your help, hk2717. Maybe someone else has a better idea.
Playing the songs through Rhythmbox is ok. So it's a mpd problem. I'll try removing/installing it and see if that helps.
