Hi,
I'm looking for something between ROX and XFM, it seems.
Something like a GTK version of XFM to use with XFCE4.
I don't like spatial, that's the only reason why I ditched ROX.
I've been using XFM lately, but it's not GTK.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Bruno

enligthenment 0.17 is a DE, and they have developed a filemanager in GTK2.
I've used it, and I found it pretty ok, although I could't figure out a way to configure it haha
can't remember it's name though, but it was either...
nevermind! here is a link:
http://evidence.sourceforge.net/
otherwise - nautilus is pretty nice

Nautilus depends too much on GNOME.
This is the best one I've found so far, would rock in GTK2:

How about emelfm or emelfm2. The first is in Extra.
or gentoo, which is in current.

GTK 1.X isn't that bad, but it's not that funny either.
I wouldn't be suprised if someone is actually porting that app to gtk2 right now

he didn't want a spatial filebrowser

My misunderstanding - I thought spatial was where a new window opened every time you enter a new subdirectory?
The applications above don't do that.
Anyway, another more Endeavour-like app is xwc at:

Filer use GTK2 and Perl.

just use Nautilus and if you dont' like the spatial mode {I LIKEEEEEEE it}, then just get gtweakui [al package]
then re gtweakui-nautilus there you enable the
ALWAYS USE BROWSER VIEW
google next time

See how difficult it is?
Filer: page is so slow that not even Google's cache shows the complete page.
Nautilus: depends on GNOME, not just GTK but a lot of dependencies. Plus it doesn't work very nicely under other DEs like XFCE.
XWC: same as XFE. I like it and have been using it, but it's not GTK. Endeavour has the same kind of interface but it's GTK1.
EmelFM and Gentoo: I'm looking for non MidnightCommander-like file managers. One pane should be for the directory tree, the other for files.
Spatial is a completely different thing, means opening a new window everytime you click on a folder (which pollutes the screen) or going into that directory (forcing you to open a new window if you want to drag a file between directories). Browser or navigational mode is a two-pane mode, one pane for the tree, other for the files. Much more logical to my way of working.
I'd love to see a GTK2 version of Endeavour2. Or a two-pane (tree and files) version of ROX-Filer.

what about xfce's file manager?

About XFFM (XFCE File Manager), looks a bit better for the next version 4.2 :
http://www.xfce.org/images/screenshots/xfce42.png
But I've tried it on a CVS build and didn't liked it as much as XFE.
And it's not quite a tree pane + file pane design, it's a "triangle tree" in every pane

alternative is a brilliant filemanager: konqueror
see here, what it can do:
http://daperi.freelinuxhost.com/flow/konquerorFM.jpg
EDIT: i know, you need something in gtk2, but if something like this would exist that uses gtk2 and has all features konqueror has, i would use it --- konqueror you need a little hdd-space for installation and have to wait once that kdeinit starts, but then, it's great :-)
The impossible missions are the only ones which succeed.

Have a look at Endeavour2. It's GTK1, but since you're not working in KDE (or so it seems) it might be a lighter alternative. I have to google if it's possible to use AA fonts in GTK1 somehow.
Of course Konqueror has the advantage of being a web browser has well
EDIT: Hmmm... http://gdkxft.sourceforge.net/
EDIT2: Damn. Seems it's not very stable

i run kdeinit from x-startup, because i use some kde apps quite often (kmail, korganizer, amarok ...), so once a day i'm waiting to kdeinit to start anyway
endeavour2 is gtk1 (what makes it look strange on a 15" screen in UXGA - everything small) and it's front remembers too much on windows (and this makes me a little bit nervous - out of custom ;-) ; it's almost an instinct to save files every 2 min under windows or want to if the gui looks similar)
it is of course a lighter alternative (konqueror has momentum starting), and if it would be gtk2 it would be a really great tool

gdkxft looks promising, but is in the beginning - and i don't give gtk1 a really great future - let's hope someone ports the rest of gtk1-apps to gtk2 ;-)

did a little search for gtk2 fm's

looks very promising
some docs for ideas, if someone of you starts a new fm-project:

btw - thank you, everyone!
I fell in love with emelFM2 - it's a bit buggy, but we can probably work it out :]

Asked the same question at FreeBSDForums and Velocity was suggested:
http://www.freebsdforums.org/forums/sho … adid=25164
Velocity is the new GTK2 version of GFileRunner:
http://gfilerunner.sourceforge.net/index.php?menu=1
Anyone tried it? Looks interesting.

Not sure velocity FM is even maintained anymore as the homepage no longer exists. Only thing velocity I can even find is the velocity template engine.
Offline
Yeah I know. Although if you read that FreeBSDForums post there is a FreeBSD port already... strange
But GFileRunner is up and running, although it's GTK1. Have a look.
EDIT: It's not a "no longer exists" thing, but a "doesn't exist yet" one...

I have been searching for a fm to replace konqueror. This egofm looks good. Do we have a package?
