I just tried it again, and although I didn't find the site to be very slow, top says the CPU usage went from 1% to 60%.

as much as i love archlinux, and linux in general, and would never ever again consider an ms os or mac, in my 3 years of linux, i have learnt that web browsers in linux DONT work as well as in other os!
its the only problem i have ever come across in linux that i cant fix, and have now learnt to just grin and bear the problem!
i have herd every excuse for my browser not running correctly, and followed hundreds of fellow linux users advice on how to fix the issue, but nothing has ever brought my browser up 2 speed!
i dont run a high spec machine, in fact its quite the opposite, but other os on this machine other than linux would run much more efficiently with web browsers.
the best browsers i have found for speed and functionallity are;
swiftfox
a properly optimised version of firefox
opera
good luck guorke in finding a solution.

Ah.
I reinstall archlinux and opera. now the speed is faster.
so maybe question is firefox or xorg config.

I don't know... could it be you don't have TTF fonts for Chinese characters on your Arch Install?

I don't install the TTF fonts , but firefox can display these chinese webpage. and opera worked better than firefox , gnome web browse.
I remeber that the nvidia driver can't work better with firefox. maybe it's true.

I know you don't need to install TTF fonts to see Chinese characters, but maybe firefox handles bitmap fonts slower than TTF ones. Just a guess, though.

i get this problem with every site that intensively uses flash.
for example this one: www.bug.hr works slower than some other 'normal' sites, and it's bearable.
but, if i open that same site in like another 4 or 5 tabs, the whole firefox would just get too slow. i get this problem on 2 of my computers which both have pretty good hardware and this shouldn't be happening i guess

I have to say that many Chinese pages are very slow on my Arch32 (and they were also very slow when I was still using windows). They would make (and still do make) firefox crawl to a halt. I have flashblock and it is stopping all flash stuff so its not due to flash eating all the resources ..... I always found this strange but it was never a big concern to me because mostly I see english pages.
Maybe if there is someone experienced in web design that can take a quick look at the site code and check if there is anything that looks like the probable cause of the problem ....
Another funny thing is that at least some versions of firefox must work well, otherwise I guess it would be a no go for Chinese users, did you try a localized version? Maybe there is something slightly different that makes it work better.
Edit:
Localized versions don't seem to be any faster than the version on the repo .... my only guess is that maybe some font is missing and it may be slowing down firefox although that seems quite unlikely. Another possibility is an upstream bug .... trying a livecd from other distros might help (or not) to figure this out ... if it works well in another distro then maybe some extra patch was applied to correct this problem.

I have noscript installed in firefox, so all kinds of scripts and flash and so forth are disabled by default, so that's apparently not it. The site brought my 5% cpu firefox to 50% too. I am using firefox-pgo 3.0.7 from aur.
I ran the site in Konqueror kde4 and it worked without any problems or cpu spiking beyond the initial page loading, as far as I can tell. It also scrolls pretty much normal as far as I can tell. Odd..
Guorke, perhaps run the webpage in konqueror and see if you have similar results?

geebus that website is SLOW, or extremely resource-intensive.

I had this problem before when I read Chinese websites, and I've it fixed.
The solution is to install these font packages:
ttf-arphic-uming
ttf-arphic-ukai
ttf-fireflysung
Once you have above installed, you will find FF load up Chinese, Japanese and Korean web sites as fast as loading English websites. AND display them correctly.
Hope this help.

I've tested this and it seems to work, www.sohu.com now works as fast as any page written in English, I've asked a friend for some links to other pages written in Chinese (which I knew to be slow) and all is working well now.
Thanks for the tip .

i wouldn't stop using archlinux even if i had to use lynx only, chromium is pretty fast but the bad thing is that it comes from google. Firefox became a hog on all platforms specially if you mix it with flash.
