netgear wg311 unable to set essid

more problems, now i'm setting up a small desktop with my router at home, so i bought the netgear wg311 wireless pci card. (wired is not feasable)

the thing is, i install the drivers using ndiswrapper, and after a 'ifconfig wlan0 up', it works fine (the light is flashing and everything)
iwlist wlan0 scan sees my home network,
but when i run "iwconfig wlan0 essid XXXX" it dosent seem to wanna associate with my router

i have it working with my laptop (intel 3945) and even though i'm using wpa, it still associates with iwconfig wlan0 essid XXXX.
i've tried the XP, ME, and 2K drivers with ndiswrapper, and they all do the same thing

You set the ESSID _before_ bringing the interface up.

why would it be different? in my laptop, (3945 chipset) i always set the essid after bringing it up and it works perfectly.

some drivers behave oddly.

I know at least one driver requires the interface to be down when options are set, whereas another one needs it up as it is turned off completely when it's put down.
