After the recent downtime I wanted to open a discussion about the possibility of mirrors for the forum, wiki, aur, etc. I'm sure there are people in the community (myself included) who would be willing to forward some hosting.

I'd definately be willing. I have a vps at linode that's not doing anything right now; coincidentally it's also running archlinux.

Agreed... something needs to be done.
Wasn't the site off-line for something like 30 hours, or more?

Nah, less.... I calculate the downtime was no more that 29 hours 26 minutes.

I feel depressed, lonely and doesn't know what to do when not able to access the forums and wiki for 29 hours.
Hehehe.

I didnt realize it was down so long, but I guess I havent been on the forums since 2 days ago. On a related note, can we get a status page somwhere, maybe a developer's blog or some such (outside of the archlinux.org hierarchy, or served outside of these pages)? just a small "system is up" or "www is down" kind of message, nothing fancy.

I had a mini-panic attack thinking archlinux.org had been removed from the internet

OMG I LOST THE INTERNETS.
I hope you all went outside and got some exercise or something. But seriously, what do you mean by "mirroring" all of these things? How would that even work? If you are really into this kind of stuff, then you should try to get involved with our development team first, then bring forth an actual proposal.

I think only the wiki needs to be mirrored, since it's a very rich source of information for people who are installing/setting up things.

yeah forums probably don't need mirrored, but wiki/aur I think would still be nice

Not removed from the internet...they were just working on translating everything to German.

Is it possible to mirror the wiki without having it "editable" ? Just search only, no editing/logins ? IE: a static wiki.
If so, I would mirror it on http://archlinux.us/wiki/ .... it would be a simple cron job to update if the developers could make a copy of it available in a static location and update it every week or so.

and projects.archlinux.org .. I was working on refactoring the installer but the git repo's were down and I couldn't find any mirrors. (git is probably the easiest to mirror, just clone to github or something)

projects.archlinux.org is allready mirrored at git.archlinux.de. About the wiki: Yes this might be a good idea. If anyone knows how to get a readonly-copy of mediawiki which can be updated incrementally, let me know. (No, wget is no option ;-))

I think the XML dump feature of media wikis would work. Get a cron job to dump the contents of all current pages periodically then let mirrors grab the dumped contents and import it into their copy of media wiki. No server/user credentials, logs, etc. are exchanged, just the content.

Yes forums is way too much to do a backup I guess but the wiki and the AUR are good candidates for a weekly backup to mirrors. I guess it could be once every two weeks or so too, just so we could have some reference if anything like this happens again.
Oh and we should learn from the bad experiences of others, look at what happened with the gentoo wiki I know you are going to say this will not happen to us but .... better be safe than sorry.
