the new -02 catalyst package works MUCH better for me
great job
still have issues with compiz, but metacity it fast.
i can live with that

I just updated to -02 as well and it actually loads X which is a good thing. But I'm still getting slow client redraws (using dwm for instance). Before upgrading I completely removed the old version of catalyst/utils so this is vanilla. I'm just glad it works...thanks Jan and/or Andy!

Finally got this to work!
Now I don't know whether it the catalyst-utils 8.11-0.3 or the installing of mesa 7.2-1 and xf86-input-evdev 2.0.7-1
(combined with all the fixes in this thread), that finally fixed this for me.
Great driver anyways, no checkerboard of doom, no tearing in videos and its fast.

Ugh, so changing anything in amdcccle results in x freezing on black screen on startup.
Anyone have an idea howto fix that?

Is amdcccle shown in your desktop menu? It's not on my Xfce 4.6beta.

Your Post finally gave me the idea how to possibly fix X starting with a black screen only - I deleted /etc/ati/amdpcsdb and regenerated it again with "sudo aticonfig --initial". Afterwards X started as normal, and even changes in xorg.conf followed by a call of aticonfig worked. Maybe this solution will help you as well.

Finally playing DVDs and live HD smoothly! MythTV is still a mess (menus and playback), but that's another battle. The bad news is that my glxgears fps were cut in half from 2000 to 950. Anyone else experience that? Might be a configuration problem, but for now, I'll sacrifice 3d for video.

I'm getting 10258.815 FPS in glxgears with a 4870.
I don't know if this is normal though, as I don't remember what I used to get

Yes it is in kde4's menu atleast.

@Mikko777: would you mind posting your xorg.conf somewhere for me? I'm just wondering if I've missed something because I'm lucky to get to 200 fps in glxgears and resizing windows are like watching a slideshow, sometimes taking up to 30 seconds to complete.
I've tried disabling/enabling AIGLX, Xv overlay, and GL overlay, and linking libdri.xorg to libdri.so instead of the default libdri.ati. Nothing seems to improve performance for this X1400 card.

Sure, altho since this is a new arch64bit install my xorg.conf is pretty much the default one.
Remember to add nopat on kernel boot options tho.

Thanks for the info, I hadn't heard about the nopat option before. Unfortunately it didn't do the trick either and my xorg was pretty much identical to yours already.

nopat had only been required for the slightly buggy 8.8 release, all has been fine again since catalyst 8.9. Anyways, glxgears is no reliable benchmark (in fact it's no benchmark at all). You can ignore this value completely. Only actual performance in 3D applications will give you a true result of the latest release. I've read about glxgears value changes from 8000 to 2000, while the performance in opengl raised...

well .. im using this testing package as we speak, and although a few of the more annoying bugs from 8.8 remain, i get horrible X crashes seemingly at random & kwin compositing is noticeably slower..
I guess this is a beta version ... But what ever happened to the real 8.10 ? ... why didnt catalyst from extra/ ever get the update?..
from what i can see now its either use 8.8 from extra or 8.11 beta from testing .. or build & pray ABS ..
let me know.. i have a feeling most of my issues stem from the newer x server rather than catalyst itself..

because the official 8.10 never supported xserver 1.5

Hi!
For a while I stuck with kernel 2.6.26, ndiswrapper 1.52 and catalyst 8.9 but today I tried to upgrade catalyst (supposed to support the new kernel). However, now that I have installed catalyst 8.11, when I startx the mouse and keyboard won't respond. Is this an issue with synaptics?

This is an issue with the xorg-server/xf86-input-evdev packages and is being discussed elsewhere here on the forums...the quickest solution that should work is to add the following to the ServerFlags section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf:
Option "AutoAddDevices" "false" # disable hotplugging?
Option "AllowEmptyInput" "false" # enable legacy input drivers (kbd, mouse, etc.)
If that doesn't do the trick for you, have a look through the forums here for more in-depth discussion.

Maybe you want to check this site of the wiki: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xor … otplugging (Thanks to the new .install file in the latest xorg-server-update. Whoever did that gets a free hug from me. )
Catalyst 8.11 final is out now. I haven't tried it yet, will once I get back to my desktop. Nothing special to be expected I'd say. But no longer some cheap beta. We'll surely see updated packages in testing soon. You can get it here and try for yourself:
Catalyst 8.11 (via akamei as from AMD website)
Catalyst 8.11 (directly from ATI server)
EDIT: Corrected first link (directed to 8.10 at first)

I tried to make update the PKGBUILD for it, but couldn't ever get it to work right after working with it for a while.
I've got to wait for the properly-done one to hit testing.

I had to enable Magic SysRq under kernel hacking in my kernel config in order to compile 8.11. Didn't even need a patch Just used the same PKGBUILD from abs but with the patch removed.

What's in core right now, btw I use the x86_64 driver.

So, I noticed that the testing package was updated to 8.11 final. So, I updated and now when X is started, I get a black screen, indefinitely. I tried removing amdpcsdb to no avail. Is anyone else having this problem, and or know how to fix it?

Did you also comment out the Rgbpath in /etc/X11/xorg.conf? That's a common cause of black screen (the path is no longer necessary as of xorg-server 1.5.
