Internet slows down

edit: Modified the first post since new info came up. Seems it was not the torrent. I restarted my network and did a speedtest on the internet. It gave me good speed. But when I ran it again it had slowed down drasticaly.

I have using a wireless network through netcfg2. And my usb-dongle uses the rtl8187 module (version b supported natively since 2.6.27)
The current wireless profile looks like this:

CONNECTION="wireless"
INTERFACE=wlan0
SCAN="yes"
SECURITY="wpa"
ESSID="my_essid"
KEY="my_secret_password"
IP="dhcp"
POST_UP="iwconfig wlan0 rate 5.5M fixed" (Because my network went down regulary I added this line as mentioned in the wiki, and it made it very stable.)
DHCP_TIMEOUT=10

Anyone who can help me to solve this problem?

Re: Internet slows down

You said something about torrent. Did you check your current upload speed? If it is too high, your download will be much lower. It is easy to monitor the network speed with gkrellm.

Re: Internet slows down

I first thought it was a problem with the torrent, but I noticed that the problem occour without it even started. And when I checked it didn't upload anything.
The speed reduction is also rather specific. As for torrent it starts at around 700kbps when I have restarted the network but then drops to 100kbps in a few seconds.
Also when I then browse the web (and a torrent is dowloading at 100kbps) it gets realy slow. Almost as the torrent is using all of my bandwith.

Re: Internet slows down

A little update. Reinstalled Arch and went back to 64bits. The same problem is still there. Changed my network profile so it uses the static ip, but still the same problem.

When I do a speed test on the internet, it works fine until it starts to test my upload speed. After that the whole network get slowed down.
Also as soon as I start a torrent program it slows down, perhaps this could be related?

Re: Internet slows down

Does it happen when the connection is wired?

Re: Internet slows down

No, I did the reinstallation wired and it went fine.
I'm beginning to suspect its a issue with the module. If so, can anyone help me get all the needed info from my system and report it as a bug?

Re: Internet slows down

Take a look at http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9143 . They said there's a workaround in http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Rtl … mes_out.3F, which is:

iwconfig wlan0 rate 5.5M fixed

Re: Internet slows down

I have that line in my config (first post). It did solve an earlier problem I had, so I will try to modify that line and see if that helps.
Also thanks for all your help. Problems like this is irritating, but fun to solve when you have help smile

Re: Internet slows down

Does it happen on all distros no matter what network you connect to? I had a similar problem, and it turned out to be the router that couldn't handle the connections when I uploaded, especially when I was using torrents. Didn't have the problem with the wire either.

Nope, my eepc running ubuntu connects fine. But I have not tried the usb-adapter on that computer since I haven't upgraded the kernel (and thus haven't got native module support for it).
