weird networking problem [SOLVED]

Hi
I have two computers running Archlinux one is Desktop and the other one is a server.
I've been using them for almost 2 years. The problem is my server its having a weird networking problem.

Yesterday it was working perfectly fine i just rebooted the server this morning and wanted to upgrade it
with pacman -Syu  and i get this error.

error: failed retrieving file 'core.db.tar.gz' from ftp.archlinux.org : No address record
error: failed retrieving file 'core.db.tar.gz' from ftp.nethat.com : No address record
error: failed retrieving file 'core.db.tar.gz' from locke.suu.edu : No address record
error: failed retrieving file 'core.db.tar.gz' from mirrors.unixheads.org : No address record
error: failed retrieving file 'core.db.tar.gz' from ftp-linux.cc.gatech.edu : No address record

error: failed retrieving file 'core.db.tar.gz' from mirrors.easynews.com : No address record
error: failed retrieving file 'core.db.tar.gz' from ftp.ibiblio.org : No address record
error: failed retrieving file 'core.db.tar.gz' from holmes.umflint.edu : No address record
error: failed retrieving file 'core.db.tar.gz' from archlinux.c3sl.ufpr.br : No address record
error: failed retrieving file 'core.db.tar.gz' from archlinux.c3sl.ufpr.br : No address record
error: failed retrieving file 'core.db.tar.gz' from gd.tuwien.ac.at : No address record
error: failed retrieving file 'core.db.tar.gz' from ftp.belnet.be : No address record
error: failed retrieving file 'core.db.tar.gz' from ftp.sh.cvut.cz : No address record

It's basically a BitTorrent server running only archlinux core, azureus and some network services like sshd, samba, nfs..

There is nothing wrong with my network settings in /etc/rc.conf i have tried using static ip and dhcp it didn' t help.
The weird part is i can ping like google.com and surf from my server using lynx and i can send torrent files to
azureus via its http interface and it's downloading right now at speed of almost 2 Mbit/s, with azures i couldn't upload torrent urls
i get error but i can upload torrent files and it starts the download.

Using pacman 3.1.1-1
nothing wrong with pacman.conf and mirrorlist ( tested 5 days ago with pacman -Sy i just synced but i didn't upgraded anything)

I can't use wget either

wget http://ftp.belnet.be/mirror/ftp.gnu.org/gnu/gsl/gsl-1.11.tar.gz
--2008-04-26 21:40:23-- http://ftp.belnet.be/mirror/ftp.gnu.org/gnu/gsl/gsl-1.11.tar.gz
Slår upp ftp.belnet.be... misslyckades: Namn eller tjänst okänd.
wget: kunde inte slå upp värdadressen "ftp.belnet.be"

it says failed: name or services unknown
wget: can't resolve "ftp.belnet.be" address.

with the same settings the desktop computer is working perfectly fine.

I have this in my /etc/resolv.conf

nameserver 192.168.0.1

I have even tried opendns 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220.

 ping google.se
PING google.se (66.249.93.104) 56(84) bytes of data.

rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 23.772/26.653/30.051/2.186 ms

The problem was /etc/nsswitch.conf
changed

hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns mdns4

to

hosts: files dns

Re: weird networking problem [SOLVED]

What's your "ifconfig -a" look like?

It's very strange it can't resolve addresses sometimes, but you can ping domain names?

Thanks, but it has nothing to do with pacman the problem is network related.

Ok, then. Aren't all of these mirrors ftp server? I mean, don't you have blocked ftp or something like that? Your network looks fin otherwise.

I can't wget http://blahblah.com/file.xxx either i can't upload my torrents files vi http://blahblah.com/file.torrent i have to save it locally
c:\winblows\file.torrent and upload the files to azureus and from server i can download files via lynx like  http://blahblah.com/file.torrent it asks if i want to save
the file and it works.

This is one strange problem that i can't really understand one day everything is working and the next day without any changes to the sever this happen.

Re: weird networking problem [SOLVED]

I wanted to bump this because this problem is happening to me as well. I also have two machines that have been functioning fine. After a restart a couple of days ago, one of the machines appears to be having strange dns issues. My pacman has the same problem as the original poster, and I also am unable to resolve host names using avahi (ie I cannot do ssh somehost.local). Pinging and browsing work fine.

I was able to restore pacman by changing the line in my nsswitch.conf back to

hosts: files dns

from

hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns mdns4

. Unfortunately this means I can't access avahi services from that machine. Oddly enough bssh still works. Also, the machine has no problem broadcasting its own avahi services. From my other computer, I can do something like

ssh affectedhost.local

I should add that my other machine has extremely similar hardware and is set up identically, yet it has no problems.

Any thoughts on what is going on here? It is extremely strange that this just randomly started happening. I have tried disabling ipv6 as in the wiki but that did not help.

EDIT: I figured out the problem - I did not have nss-mdns installed. I don't know why this was working without nss-mdns previously...
