[SOLVED] Will Arch fit in 5 GB?

I would like to fit Arch into a 5 GB partition. I will use this partition for the whole / (root). I already have a separate partition that holds my music files etc., so I'm mostly concerned about the size of the Arch system itself.

I haven't used Arch for a little while and I cannot recall how much space I need. I will be setting up a very lightweight system with only a handful of applications. I would like to use the ABS, though.

The Arch Beginner's Guide lists some fairly large space requirements, but I am assuming those are for the average or "heavier than average" cases (for example, installing GNOME, KDE, and so on).

Thanks in advance. smile

I'm pretty sure it will. I have 447 packages installed at the moment and use less than 2.5 GB on the entire file system except /home.

Re: [SOLVED] Will Arch fit in 5 GB?

Just make sure you keep /var/cache/pacman/ clean and you should be right. I'm using 5.3gb on my laptop excluding /home, /boot and /tmp, but 1.8gb of that is pacman cache...
/dev/sda5              19G  5.3G   14G  29% /

My work desktop uses 3.8gb with 1.4gb in pacman cache...
/dev/mapper/lvm0-root       16G  3.8G   13G  24% /

Thanks for all the replies. I'm still mulling over my options, but at least now I feel comfortable with the idea of installing Arch into a 5 GB partition. wink
