so just yesterday i installed awesome..
instantly, i am falling in love with tiling window managers
one thing that i noticed right away is that with the tiling window managers CLI apps just look awesome
right now i use CLI for alot of stuff anyway, but i have never thought about using a CLI music player until i tried awesome
so does anybody here use a CLI music player and if so which one?

Mpd is very popular and can be run easily with a number of good cli, and other, front-ends. http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mpd

My favorite is cmus (not an mpd client). Try it out.

There's cmus and cplay, too. I use cplay-mplayer which is just cplay with a MPlayer back-end and a few patches.
Edit: beaten on cmus

Midnight Commander is flexible enough to be one

<huge_IMHO!>
Cplay is really, really simple. Too simple fore some.
Cmus is complex for me. Its tabbing options are rather confusing, but it is also very configurable. It's quite great if you like to be in control.
Mpd is seriously awesome, if you're into more advanced stuff. Probably the best out of all said (haven't tried it personally, i'll believe millions of people online). It has loads of frontends, so you will certainly find one to suit your needs.
Mocp is the perfect middle. Even though it has some serious bugs in the current version, i use it on daily basis.

Now the realistic answer: try them all out and find the one you like the most ![]()

you could also give pytone a try (although it's clearly not as popular as other options):

My personal favorite is mpd with ncmpcpp. The former is in [extra] and the latter in [community].

i also use ncmpc as a frontend to mpd. mpd setup can be overwhelming but useful once done, i now use icecast to stream mpd from home to work. (ssh tunnells ftw!)
i'd vote for cmus as a standalone CLI music app.

another vote for cmus!

I think, You should try mpd + ncmpcpp. Powerful, easy to configure, with great sound quality.

+1 for mpd + ncmpc / ncmpcpp
simply the most flexible solution. and you can always let your music run in the background as a daemon.

Mpd user here. I use mingus as the front-end. Mingus is an mpd client written in Emacs Lisp.

well i tried a few of them
here are my thoughts
i think mpd would be perfect if i set up a seperate music server or something, but to me it seems like a waste of resources to run my music as a daemon when i only listen to it once in a while
other then that i think mpd is awesome
(for frontends to mpd i tried ncmpc and ncmpcpp, of the two i think i liked ncmpc better just because it was simpler to configure for me)
next i tried cmus, it seemed pretty good, but i didn't really like the setup where your library, playlist, and que are on different pages, i mean yea it works good and i probably could adapt fairly quickly, but its just not really ideal
last, i tried pytone
i like pytone the best of all the ones i tried, so i decided to stick with it
the setup is great because i can see the playlist, library, and info about the songs all at the same time, plus the interface is easily configurable, and to me the keys seem more friendly then cmus
thanks again

xmms2
Beats mpc+mpd
I tried xmms2 some time ago, but somehow i don't like the guis i tried... do you use a qt{3,4} frontend? if so: could you recommend a good one?
cli frontends would be nice too.
atm i'm mainly using mpd with ncmcpp and my small dmenu script (can be found in the community contributions forum) or amarok. (Depends on whether i'm using kde3 or wmii.)

What features are you looking for? If this is a feature war, there are some solutions based on them. I will overview the three I tried
Cmus: complex filters, playqueue, software volume control, music library, excellent search function, programmable bindings and key macros. Controllable through cmus-remote. HIGHLY configurable. If you do not configure it, the vi-type functions may be a blessing or a curse. This one is my favorite currently.
MPD: runs as a daemon (very nice), crossfading support, software volume, a single playlist at a time BASED on the music library. Bindings and features vary depending on client. Variety of clients gives you great choice even though framework remains the same. I suggest Ncmpcpp in general. Use this if you just "turn on" your music library and want it to cycle through. No play queue/filters.
Music on Console: runs as a daemon, single playlist, beautiful/intuitive interface, most straightforward of the three but least-featured. Very nice and lightweight. Keeps your music out of your way. No music library/play queue/filters.
Pytone: Looks to be like Cmus + crossfading ++. Like a console rhythmbox! However, it does not run on x86_64, so I haven't tried it
Overall, I think the mpd daemon with its crossfading and client choice PLUS the advanced features of CMus (filters) would make the best music player. I listen to music in multiple languages and genres, so I prefer some kinds of music over others at times. If the interface was better, CMus' filters would easily beat all GUI filter systems.

just to be complete: mpd 0.14 has just been released
