My server runs the smartd daemon so that I receive an email when a drive is bound to fail. Today I checked /var/log/daemon and found this:
Dec 26 15:22:47 hb-server smartd[2319]: Device: /dev/sdd, FAILED SMART self-check. BACK UP DATA NOW!
Dec 26 15:22:47 hb-server smartd[2319]: Sending warning via mail to hyperbaton@gmail.com ...
Dec 26 15:22:48 hb-server smartd[2319]: Warning via mail to xxxxxxxxxxx@gmail.com produced unexpected output (46 bytes) to STDOUT/STDERR: /usr/sbin/sendmail: No such file or directory
Dec 26 15:22:48 hb-server smartd[2319]: Warning via mail to xxxxxxxxxxx@gmail.com: successful
I thought smartd used mail to send it's emails, guess I was wrong. But this sendmail application, I can't find it in the repositories, where can I get it?

output (46 bytes) to STDOUT/STDERR: /usr/sbin/sendmail: No such file or directory
Look - that's your error right there.
It can 'send' mails - which usually means you need an MTA installed to handle that. Remember the Unix philosophy: let specialised tools cooperate to get complex things done in a flexible manner.

So what should I install? Will postfix install the sendmail application?
[hb@hb-server ~]$ yaourt -Ss sendmail
extra/postfix 2.5.5-1
Secure, fast, easy to administer drop in replacement for Sendmail (MTA)

It won't, but it is an MTA too (and I guess the package has a symlink to the binary that's called sendmail for compatibility reasons). It will need some configuring though .

Okay, I'm starting to follow I think I've installed ssmtp and configured it. That hard drive is going to keep on crashing, so I will let you know if it works soon enough Thanks for the help so far.

No problem . I stripped your e-mail address out of the posts though, never know when a spambot picks it up .

Hehe, thanks, but gmail spam filter is pretty awesome, I get about 500 spam mails every month, so it doesn't really matter anymore
