hi all :>
are there any opensource apps for chatting within a local network? the network consists of several machines running winxp and a linux box; samba is up and running.

I second this suggestion. You probably can get an ejabberd server up and running with little fuzz.

Otherwise: Gajim has a feature to use avahi to make something that feels like jabber over LAN.
