GRUB and GRUB2

Which are the main differences between this two?
We still use GRUB1 (i mean, the "old" version) Why not grub2?
I think grub2 has ext4 support, unlike grub1, does this mean grub1 is about to become obsolete?

From a personal point of view, I much prefer grub over grub2. The changes to grub.conf/menu.lst are stupid. They have changed the naming convention. Grub2 doesn't use disk zero any more, everything starts with disk 1. The conf file now seems to live in the /etc directory. I usually configure /boot on a separate partition

grub2 still uses disk zero, just not partition zero, so your first partition would be hd0,1.
Grub2 still uses a configuration file in /boot -> /boot/grub/grub.cfg
