No, they're turned of. But frankly I don't really care about desktop effects. Turning them on will cost you speed for sure Perhaps kde-4.2 will do some wonders, who knows?

In that case I'll wait to see how KDE 4.2 performs. I've got KDE 4.1 on my main machine and I've managed to make the LXDE on my Eee look exactly the same so no point to change over to KDE4 yet. I've only got the Eee 701 so the cpu is not nearly as fast as an atom. I wish someone would make an upgrade board for it.

Hey nirvanix,

Yes everything can be done by the right-click menu. xfdesktop also handles the wallpaper and keyboard bindings etc. I added the very small dock called 'wbar' at the bottom in you want a lightweight app launcher.
At first the only thing I missed was having the time on a panel, but that is solved by doing it with conky at the top. It really is simplicity and once you get used to it, looking at a desktop with icons and panels is just way too cluttered
yeah and just to add, hope it wasn't mentioned before, in xfce you can middle click (hold both buttons down on netbook) to access a window list.

oh man, I'm not a fan of that one. Tried it before a long time ago and thought the developers were smokin' crack. To each their own I guess.

A tiling WM
Seriously. No, I wouldn't actually do much tiling - just as just a nice way of keeping everything full-screen when said screen is itty-bitty.

believe me, you want dwm's monocle layout, i use it and nothing else on my 10" wind
EDIT: with the monocle_count patch to show how many apps are open in the same tag

DWM is a particularly good fit, imo. Tiny, fast, efficient, with great defaults. Tiling capabilities are more than sufficient for a netbook. The bar can be disabled with Alt-B for proper full screen view, and it can be used to display stuff like battery life. I usually set monocle as default view, and use tiling only very rarely. Dmenu is bundled by default.
Thanks for the tip about the monocle_count patch leo2501 -- it's very useful.
