broadcom-wl wpa disconnect

My broadcom (BCM4312 802.11b/g (rev 01)) wireless card is disconnecting and then sometimes reconnecting from the wireless network.
I am using netcfg 2.1.2-1 on a WPA (mixed) network. It connects and works adequately, but then drops unexpectedly.
dmesg gives series of
TKIP: RX tkey->key_idx=1 frame keyidx=2 priv=f70280c0
errors.
Attempts to shut down the connection or restart it fail.
Strangely enough, the connection will work again after some intermittent time!? (conky shows no ip when not working, then gives ip when working again).
Rebooting restores everything to working order for a time.

Using networkmanager when in the disconnect gives error:
** (nm-applet:4381): WARNING **: <WARN>  hal_net_physdev_cb(): dbus returned an error.
  (org.freedesktop.Hal.NoSuchProperty) No property net.physical_device on device with id /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/net_00_1f_e1_83_68_9

Am I just looking at (another) driver error or what?  Any ideas?

kernel 2.6.27-ARCH

Thanks
