WPA issue with WICD, EEEpc 1000H

I'm trying to connect to my network with Wicd.

What works:
Wicd can see my WPA-protected AP. If I disable WPA temporarily, it connects correctly (grabs IP with DHCP too).

What I can't get to work is access with WPA enabled.

I've tried manually changing /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf with

# wpa_passphrase myssid mypassphrase > /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf

and adding the default values from the original stock wpa_supplicant.conf file.

Following the rest of the instructions from the WPA supplicant article leads me nowhere --- I just get an error. After running

# wpa_supplicant -B -Dwext -i wlan0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf

I initially don't have any response back in the shell. Running "dhcpcd ra0" says that it's waiting for carrier, then times out.

ifconfig ra0 shows the device, but not connected to any network or with any IP.

All packages fully up to date.

Anyone know what else to try? I've looked round the wiki and forums for a while now, but can't find anything to help.

(I'm a new Arch user; only installed it on this laptop a few days ago.) Thanks.
