KDE 4.1 only runs as ROOT = not good

I swear I'm not a noob! This is just plain strange.

xinitrc has "exec startkde"

If root types "startx" and waits a few seconds, yay, KDE 4.1 loads.  I'm using it right now.

If any other user types startx, screen goes black for a few seconds, but then returns "waiting for Xserver to exit" dumps back to command prompt.  No [EE] messages or warnings.  No explanation.  Dmesg has nothing in it pertaining to X.

I'm in the dark.  What could cause this, and how do I help you help me?

Does it work if you use the login manager?

Re: KDE 4.1 only runs as ROOT = not good

OK, I set up the inittab method of using kdm

It fails and sends me to console.

I log in as root

I type kdm and hit enter

bam, kdm loads!

I am now logged in as normal user....

but still have the problem that kdm does not load at boot as it should.

Has /tmp got the right permissions:

> ls -ld /tmp
drwxrwxrwt 11 root root 4096 2009-01-15 15:01 /tmp

Otherwise, you may want to look in your users home folder and start deleting/moving the config folders.

Re: KDE 4.1 only runs as ROOT = not good

drwxrwxrwt 9 root root 280 Jan 15 02:03 tmp

It's a new install, I haven't got anything to copy...  Just stuck the OS on the box a few hours ago.

anywho, I can log in as a normal user through kdm.  I just can't get kdm to load at boot like it's supposed to.  I'd like to say what the error message is, but it gets erased by the login before I can read it.  dmesg is mum on the matter whatever it is.

hmm.. that makes no sense.. since the inittab runs kdm as root too...
