Re: kernel26-ice comments and suggestions

What does it do different from the stock arch kernel?

it mows your lawn and changes your bedsheets in the morning!

no actually, it's main feature is tuxonice support, which you can lookup in the wiki for details. also check the aur page to see which extra patches are included.

Re: kernel26-ice comments and suggestions

FYI: i updated the Tuxonice Wiki for Nvidia cards with driver versions >177. You should now be able to suspend & resume without additional hacks by using:

ProcSetting extra_pages_allowance 7500

in /etc/hibernate/common.conf.

The formerly used value of 0 (zero) is now defunct and will no longer provide a working Tuxonice setup with new Nvidia drivers.

I am going to release the new kernel. In the changelog there's no mention about the AP mode for ath5k, so i will add those patches to the PKGBUILD.

stay tuned

The patches from the jiryslab don't apply correctly against the 2.6.28.1 kernel version.
Any clues?

Re: kernel26-ice comments and suggestions

it looks like thinkpad-acpi will be included in 2.6.29, so you can skip those patches when it becomes available

Re: kernel26-ice comments and suggestions

I'm using reiser4... I build kernel myself, so I patched reiser4 for 2.6.28.1 + additional little __grab_cache_page patch which I made myself, like 2-3 days ago or so... Worked like a charm...
Do You have any special complaints about reiser4?

As for the -ice thing, I tried it, I see logs that say pm-utils are replace by tuxonice, but my stupid nvidia doesn't hibernate and hangs up, there was that page allowance thing I think... Is it so that -ice + page allowance needs hibernate script? I would like to use standard gnome power manager, so I can hibernate / suspend easily, is there a workaround for gnome to use hibernate script?
Sorry, but I don't know details or whatever else about hibernate script and integration with gnome, so any suggestion would be beneficial...
Thanx in advance...

It's exactly what I am trying to avoid... to make my own patches.

Here's some info from the Gentoo wiki regarding Tuxonice with pm-utils/Gnome:

Patch (or fix) actually was available somewhere, but for this particular case I had to make my own...
To me it doesn't make any problems, coz I always build kernels (and bunch of other stuff) with my own PKGBUILD's, so I fix it in case of problems.
I fully understand You, as You just need to make that PKGBUILD for everyone and it has to be up to date...

litemotiv: thanks for pm-utils link.

Re: kernel26-ice comments and suggestions

Can you add the custom DSDT option so that people with faulty or incomplete acpi tables can override them?

Power management options (ACPI, APM) --->
ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) Support --->
        [*] Read DSDT from initrd

Not setting a custom DSDT makes the kernel switch back to the built-in version so this is otherwise non-intrusive. Let me know if you need any testing.

Thanks smile

we'll have to wait for that until all the patches are merged and the possibly major bugs are addressed.

Re: kernel26-ice comments and suggestions

Kernel 2.6.29 will be out as soon as possible.

I am waiting for fbcondecor, reiser 4 and gentoo-sources patch.

Thinkpad acpi has been merged into the vanilla sources so we don't need that patch anymore.

Stay tuned
