Re: Laptops which run Arch

I just added an entry to the Arch Hardware Compatibility List for the Pansonic Y2 (specifically, Y2E).  All works perfectly, after some hand-tweaking for xorg and suspend-to-ram, suspend-to-disk.  Haven't tried the modem, CardBus slot, or SD card slot though.

This is a great notebook, a little long in the tooth now, having come out in 2005.  But it is fanless, very light, and with an extremely durable magnesium alloy case.  When the price of a 64 GB SLC SSD drive comes down to $200, I'll be buying one and putting it in this computer to have a *completely* silent, fan-free device with no moving parts (aside from the CD/DVD drive) that I expect to last just about forever ... running Arch Linux version 2023.06 someday I'm sure ...

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Thinkpad R500.

Everything works fine except for the fingerprint reader. Right now I have some trouble with my graphics card (Intel 4500MHD), because of the intel gem issue, and the hdaps driver doesn't want to recognize my laptop. I haven't tried my xD card reader and my PCMCIA/ExpressCard slots.

The battery lasts for 4-4.5 hours.

I have some custom scripts in the /etc/acpi directory (backlight and cpu governor control), and I have some xorg.conf tweaks for the trackpoint (found on thinkwiki).

hp nx7300

This is a 64 bit machine but got 32 bit installed because I needed Java to work (that is moot now, so I might try 32 bit).
Everything works perfectly, except for modem (never even tried, who cares...). Running KDE4 (vanilla Arch)

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Acer Aspire 4530. Supposedly a 64-bit machine, but running 32-bit Arch.

Everything works fine. As of (the very recent) kernel 2.6.27.10 release, the internal wireless card (which uses ath9k) works smoothly. Webcam works fine, current version of pm-utils suspends to disk without problem.

Only possible issue is sound card. I can't get volume through just the headphones unless I enable "surround" in ALSA and mute all speakers but the headphones. I've also not gotten the built-in microphone to work, nor any plugged-in microphone, but I haven't tried very hard and don't have the motivation to. I'm sure they can be coaxed to work, though.

Sony VAIO VGN-SZ430N. It sucks for linux because it has all the bells and whistles that only work under Windows with bloated Sony software.

I lose all the cool hardware features, but I get linux, and that is SO worth it.

Dell XPS M1530 with an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.5 GHz, nVidia GeForce card.

Fingerprint reader works. I haven't tinkered with the WiFi card.  Haven't gotten the camera/mic working yet, but I hear that it does.

Runs GNOME and Compiz without batting an eye.  I'm pretty happy with it.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Acer Aspire 5315 works fine with Arch.
Sound works.
Ethernet works (Broadcom BCM5906M).
Graphics works, except needs to use indirect rendering for compositing at the moment for whatever reason (Intel GMA965).
Wireless works with a patched madwifi driver (lspci seems to have it as an Atheros AR242x but it didn't use to be that (used to say AR5007 I think).
Internal mic might work but might not, I haven't bothered to test it as I don't use it.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

I am using the Sony Vaio VGN-N11H. Everything works apart from sound. The sound issue can easily be fixed by adding the following code to "/etc/modprobe.conf":

options snd-hda-intel model=sony-assamd

Apart from that it's really good!

Re: Laptops which run Arch

I put Arch i686 on a Sony Vaio VGN-SR21M/S. Almost everything is fine: audio, webcam, num lock, ATI proprietary drivers, wifi and ethernet work flawlessly. Suspend to ram also works perfectly under KDEmod 4. Touchpad is OK, although I still have not been able to activate the cool synaptics stuff like scrolling. Function keys to adjust luminosity and volume don't work, nor special vaio keys (which obviously work only under Vista with dedicated Sony driver). I didn't try the card reader yet.

Edit: suspend to ram doesn't work, it's not possible to restore the system and I'm left with a frozen black screen

Edit: I installed KDEmod 4.2 and the suspend to ram issue seems fixed. Maybe it's due to the integration of powerdevil into KDE which makes things run smoother.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Archlinux i686/XFCE on HP 6820s. I've got everything working except from the "FN" keys. Give me some time to figure this out.

Edit 1:

Will look in to the "FN" keys very shortly with Keytouch.

Edit 2:

Got the "FN" keys working, thanks to Keytouch and the great wike about it.

Thinkpad T400
CPU: Intel Core 2 P8600 @2.4G
Graphics: ATI Radeon HD3470 + Intel X4500 integrated
Bluetooth, Camera, Fingerprint reader, etc.

Everything works except the fingerprint reader. Graphics issues are annoying, with catalyst (8.12), xf86-video-ati and xf86-video-intel are all working, but no perfectly. Seems to me X way in Arch is bumpy. Despite of this, Arch works fine on T400.

Acer Aspire 6935g, partially working
Microphone no sound (to be inquired)
Xorg 1.5 no possible to use edev/HAL policy (I'd like to solve it, it's hard to manage scroll without any function)
SD card reader not working, I saw Knoppix 5.3 able to use it ( might be a small patch)
Modem not tested
EDIT: SD reader works as a charm big_smile.
HDMI not tested

Nearly everthing works, only fn+f[4-8] buttons and hibernation (first it did, maybe to fix) do not work. For the sound:

cat /etc/modprobe.d/sound
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel enable=1 index=0 model=basic
