Repostiories and PPC

Hi,

I'm just new to Arch having been using other distros for a while now, and I've managed to struggle through the install process. Now I'm trying to install some of the programs I need from the openbox wiki and I've fould that they ask me to do 'pacman -S obconf' and I get an error saying it's not found. Do I have to add some repos? If so how do I find the appropriate one for the PPC?

I have a few listed inn my mirrorlist file after the install, but obviously it's not in these.

Thanks for your time.

Check to make sure that the ones listed in the mirrorlist are not commented out. If they are, they have a # sign at the front. Remove those for a few mirrors in and around your location.

Remember that the archlinux.org is throttled at 50kbps,

Re: Repostiories and PPC

There's nothing commented out, but it does seem to do the same application 4 times.

Server = ...something
Server = ...something else
Server = ...
Server = ...

Where would I find out about the different repos for PPC Arch Linux?

Arch is primarily geared towards i686 and x86_64 bit architectures, although there are a few threads here on the forum that claim that it also works on i586. ArchLinuxPPC is a community project and so you may or may not find a PPC package for all the software. But you may get lucky and find that someone may have packaged it for PPC and put it in AUR. Go over to AUR and search for the package and then check out the PKGBUILD, to see if it supports the PPC architecture.

Re: Repostiories and PPC

So there aren't any other repos for Arch on the PPC?

If so then that leads me on to my next question which is how do I use sources to build my own packages. I'm used to using 'checkinstall' to produce debs, is there some similar mechanism for Arch and pacman?

Also where would be a good place to ask about PPC specific issues?

Re: Repostiories and PPC

Read about ABS and makepkg in the wiki.  I assume the PPC project has an ABS tree equivalent.

Re: Repostiories and PPC

OK I've hit a snag. Pacman says that there's no package for abs... what do I do? Also I'm still confused about the repository system for pacman. Could someone explain it simply and clearly for me. Cos I don't want to get off on the wrong foot.

Re: Repostiories and PPC

I can see that there are distros on the main ArchPPC page but I don't know how to use them. http://www.archlinuxppc.org/

My mirrorlist file reads like:

#
## $repo: Arch Linux PPC @REPO@ repository
##
#
# Europe
Server = ftp://ftp.archlinuxppc.org/$repo/os/ppc
Server = ftp://ftp2.archlinuxppc.org/$repo/os/ppc
Server = http://archlinuxppc.mirror.garr.it/mirrors/archlinuxppc/$repo/os/ppc
Server = http://mir2.archlinuxfr.org/archlinux/$repo/os/ppc

now how do I add the others to my list, and how do I go about compiling my own packages from source?

Re: Repostiories and PPC

It appears the PPC repos do not have ABS.  You can get the PKGBUILDs etc form the main Arch mirrors. e.g. everything you need for extra: http://ftp.archlinux.org/extra/os/i686/extra.abs.tar.gz

Otherwise get it from subversion or ask the PPC devs to add it.

Re: Repostiories and PPC

Hi mikeym,

  Did you get a working community repository?  I've a similar problem, and had to use AUR / ABS / Yaourt.

As I side topic; I appreciate PPC is not maintained, but if it's a case of not having a host to serve the content then perhaps I could help?  i.e. is it a case of hosting a bunch of files for people to grab... that would be a cool project, and I've always wanted to give back to the community, but how would I start?

Thanks,
n1md4

Re: Repostiories and PPC

One less kitten to think about...  finding resolve to an old problem is not a bad thing, if I found my way to this post chances are someone else will too!?  I'll admit I'm not used to 2010 yet, I didn't register 2009, and thought it was current.

I'd still like to know if there are still working ppc repositories...

Re: Repostiories and PPC

I installed Arch Linux PPC last month. The PPC repositories still work. They are not current, but I haven't looked into how "not current" they are.

After a base install, I'd say about one third of the packages I installed were by using the ABS, including OpenBox. The Arch Linux PPC repositories only seem to host [core] and some of [extra]. "libpng" and "libjpg" being out of date was a little bit of a problem, but not much.

Since installing the OS, I received a few updates through pacman.

Re: Repostiories and PPC

I'm at work right now. I can post it when I get home if you want, but it's nothing special; it's just the default five (I think) mirrors in the default order, all uncommented.

By the way, I find that the PPC repository sites can be a little flaky. Sometimes I have to try a pacman command two or three times before it will properly connect and download a package.

I'm using packer as an AUR helper. I'd like to use an "ABS helper", but haven't really found one that I have been able to use. The biggest problem is that, after using the "abs" command, the ABS tree is full of "i686" and "x86_64" packages. Most of them compile and work just fine, but I have to add "ppc" to the "arch" like in the PKGBUILD file for every package. hmm

Re: Repostiories and PPC

Thanks, drcouzelis.  Yeah, I'd appreciate the defaults again, if only to compare with what I've got.

I'd like to know what's involved in hosting and maintaining a ppc repo, if anyone could post/PM me useful links/docs/etc, t'would be grand.

Re: Repostiories and PPC

This was a dead topic... Topic was about a year old, and Mr. Elendig is not really gonna keep himself busy posting empty warning messages (well, one never knows).

Please read the forum rules and open a fresh topic for a fresh problem smile. Also, PPC topics go under x86_64 & other architectures.
