Hi,
Suppose I install something that requires me to restart the X server. For example, new fonts or something, or maybe an applet for Gnome. How can I go about doing this without restarting my computer? Thanks.

hitting ctrl+alt+backspace will kill your x server, and i believe if you're using GDM it will restart it for you at that point. but i think new fonts and such will be loaded if you just logout, and log back in? someone correct me if i'm wrong

I am indeed using GDM. Is Ctrl+Alt+Backspace not a logout function? It seems the same to me, maybe I'm mistaken.

It kills and restarts X. It's not as graceful as logging out.

I'm pretty sure ctrl+alt+backspace just kills the x server, which will end your session, and if GDM is running, it will restart x automatically for you at which point you can log back in.
