Auto connect when ethernet cable is plugged in

Hello everyone.  I have been using linux for a little while now and I was wondering about a detail with network configuration.  In the windows world, when a network cable is plugged in it can automatically connect to the network depending on its network configuration.  I was wondering if there was a similar capability in linux.  I have many times moved a laptop between different connections and then have to manually reinitialize the connection because I switched ethernet cables.  I would like to know if there is a way I can configure linux to take care of this for me.  Any info would be greatly appreciated.

smile yup. i've heard of a daemon that does exactly what you're looking for. It's called ifplugd, and there's a package available for it in Extra. You can read up about it at ifplugd's homepage.
