[SOLVED] CUPS & Network Printer problem

It took me a long time to find out what the problem was and the solution still seems strange, but it worked!

I have a HP Officejet Pro L7860 hard wired to my router.  It worked with my Ubuntu Desktop (also hard wired) and with my wife's XP laptop over Samba.  My installation on x86_64 Arch laptop seemed to function ok but always stopped with the print job hung in the queue.  Running the HP printer setup utility found the printer but could not connect.

Believe it or not the problem was in my locale setup!  Running locale showed all variables set correctly except LC_ALL, which was blank.   Running export LC_ALL=<my locale> in a root terminal fixed everything.  I can print (probably scan though I haven't tried yet) and the HP utility shows ink levels and everything else it should.

I have now added LC_ALL to my /etc/profile so that it gets set at login.

I am posting this in case it helps others.
