Blackbox 0.70beta2

HHey, I just compile the CVS, ie 0.70beta2 of Blackbox. Quick as the others and low comsumption of ram. Really easy to understand config files, menu, blackboxrc. It is great the original is back. I for one will be supporting this even if I can only by testing and providing feedback to the developer. It is also striving to compatible with the freedesktop.org standards also.....

Re: Blackbox 0.70beta2

Here is a image of my desktop so far.

ss.jpeg

I really like Blackbox. I originally used it back in 99' while I was a Evergreen State College for one of my projects. I used Corel Linux w/Blackbox on a IBM 380ED Laptop. It was amazingly fast. I think IBM make the most linux friend laptop around.

Sure you can... Why couldn't you? BlackBox is a WM for X. You can even run those progs without any WM/DE at all, just run X without a WM/DE. 8)

Re: Blackbox 0.70beta2

Blackbox lead to flux, open and the other *box window managers. It is now NetWM complient (freedesktop.org). I also has a small foot print for memory usage and an really easy set of config files, tons of themes, etc. For usage with the 0.70beta2 there is even a theme conversion tool for converting pre 0.70beta2  themes to current.

Re: Blackbox 0.70beta2

just got the devel tarball.. had to create a symlink from /usr/local/bin/blackbox to /usr/bin/blackbox to actually get it started..
let me just say the wiki page to blackbox sucks incredibly smile there are no dead links but the links actually contain no information..
I guess I'll keep messing with it for a while longer and give it a change, so hopefully I find some more info about how it works and what conf file is for what

Re: Blackbox 0.70beta2

i didnt know blackbox was still alive... huh.
personally I like the new fluxbox... though not a whole lot... i like the move to pixmap themes as the original window decoration buttons look like poo.

could anyone give me a concise explaination of what is new in this bb version?

Re: Blackbox 0.70beta2

I don't know if there's more features, but this is what I see on the website:

Implements the new NetWM standard, overhauled style syntax and aspect features, advanced features and control over them. This release adds fixed Unicode support and 'Focus Last Window on Workspace' functionality.

I know it's a good thing, but it's still kind of a bummer that there's a dependency now.  blackbox was always the WM I knew I could get up and running fast with nothing but X if I needed.

What's the difference in resource usage looking like between 0.65 and this?

Re: Blackbox 0.70beta2

I am not sure about what you say that there is a dependency? As far as I know there are dependency to run blackbox other that Xorg/Xfree and bbkeys for keys support. The resource differences I a not sure about because it has been a while since I used 0.65.

For setting it up you need a .blackboxrc file in you home directory:

Re: Blackbox 0.70beta2

I was going by this from the webpage:

X11 compatible window system; libiconv (needed for Unicode support); XFT (optional, only if you want anti-aliased fonts and fontconfig support);

and I was referring to libiconv, since it didn't say optional, as XFT does.

Re-reading it, it could be optional.  But from the way they've said it, that wasn't my first guess.

fluxbox is better by far

fluxbox is essentially blackbox with none of the useless crap blackbox adds

Re: Blackbox 0.70beta2

Who can it remove some of the stuff and remain 100% compatible?

What is FluxBox
Fluxbox Fluxbox is yet another windowmanager for X.
It's based on the Blackbox 0.61.1 code. Fluxbox looks like blackbox and handles styles, colors, window placement and similar thing exactly like blackbox (100% theme/style compability).

Re: Blackbox 0.70beta2

Who said anything about it being 100 percent compatible.

Since your using arch, I would assume you like, light, flexible, fast type window managers.  Fluxbox, just drops all the useless crap that is in Blackbox to make it faster and lighter as a window manager.  Fluxbox and Blackbox are almost 100 percent compatible, since styling, keys, and windowing are done relatively the same.  But removing excess garbage from blackbox doesnt make it non-compatible

Re: Blackbox 0.70beta2

Lets see. Blackbox no transparency, no icons-menus or icons-toolbar. Blackbox does not even have key support unless you use bbkeys. Fluxbox has all of the above. Flux and Openbox have a bit larger memory footprint.
I am trying to make a choice between the two. And if you include openbox which has xml config files which is hard but not impossible to edit. All of the above are implementing most of the NetWM standards from freedesktop.org.
I guess I will use each one for a couple of weeks to see which one I like the most.

I would recommend OpenBox instead (and no, I don't intend to make this thread into a flamewar ^_^), since we still are talking about *boxes, and not the works of pekdon (the maker of pekwm).
and oh - pekdon is a nice fellow :]

Hey!  I know pekwm isn't exactly a *box, but it's my favorite of the bare wms with a plain root menu to launch apps from.  I think I was the one who mentioned *boxes specifically...no...

Out of the actual boxes, I think I like flux the best, although open and black are nice too.

Re: Blackbox 0.70beta2

Right now my favorite is pekWM, but I like openbox.  I'm not quite happy with any window manager at the moment, but that might be saying more about me than anything else.  I think if you're a Linux newbie trying out a *box WM, Fluxbox or Blackbox are the way to go just due to seniority.  They've been around the longest, and so have the largest following that would be able to provide you with support.

I find pekWM a LOT easier to configure than flux or openbox though.  As far as providing powerful tools at your fingertips, it wins hands down IMHO.  It's easy to completely configure mouse actions and autoproperties for certain windows and the docs are good.  The CVS version is great, but most of the themes that are out there are incompatible.  Fixing the syntax or converting the images in the themes generally is easy though.

Anyway, just my 7 cents.

Re: Blackbox 0.70beta2

I want to try the new CVS blackbox.  Would it be prudent to just use the pkgbuild for the current blackbox, and edit it to use the downloaded CVS package?  Or how did you compile it?   Mind posting your PKGBUILD?
