Arch setup behind WebSense - pacman not syncing

Okay so I'm at this fancy boarding school and I'm setting up Arch. I don't know why, but I can't get Pacman to sync (or add packages, upgrade, or anything). I assume this is due to WebSense, the school's favoured naziware. I installed links off the base CD and it is from there that I am typing this. The HTTP-based authentication works fine.

Wget and links have no issues so I think it's being picky about non-HTTP traffic, like pacman's FTP. I noticed the mirrors listing has an HTTP mirror; can I tell pacman to use HTTP and that mirror? I assume that would work just fine.

Normally, this T1 connection would be a gift from God for downloading packages but right now it's being a pain in the butt. Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Yeah, just move some nearby http mirrors to the top of /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist.

My school blocks port 21, thus ftp won't work. Just modify /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist and put some http mirrors up top. I like to use http://archlinux.unixheads.org/ or http://mirror.rit.edu/archlinux/

EDIT: tomk beat me at it...

Thanks to both of you! I moved the eassynews HTTP mirror to the top and the sync worked. Thanks a ton!

Cool! Just FYI I've had issues with the easynews mirror being out of date, etc... so if you do have issues you might want to switch. They may have fixed the problems though.

I have always found it best to use some university mirror, because 1) Those univ. linux groups are pretty much up to date on their mirrors 2) I have always found their bandwidth to be the best. 3) You don't have to worry about a mirror going down -- because univ groups don't go down very soon as opposed to a company which may just shutdown its mirrors

Find a univ. mirror near your place.
