The Common apps wiki page lists Gajim as a lighter IM. I currently use pidgin and ps_mem.py tells me that it uses about 8-9MB of memory. When I installed gajim it took up 27MB of memory - more than that of Skype and also that of Xorg.
Am I doing something wrong? I only need a jabber client because I only use Google Talk and none of the other protocols. So I was considering making a switch.
I tried finch(that comes with pidgin) but couldn't get the hang of it -- although I must say I tried it only once. I do know of CLI apps for IM...but it will take me sometime to get used to.
Thanks for your input.

Though not exactly relevant to your question, note that pidgin supports far more IM networks that Gajim. Also, I'd try using htop to see the memory usage - for me, pidgin takes ~200mb of virtual memory.

bitlbee FTW, though it is sort of CLI.

Yeah I know, but I am willing to put Pidgin in front of the firing squad if I find another lighter jabber IM. Its just that I came across the Common apps page thru some thread and thought I should check out gajim -- but as it turns out it seems more heavier than pidgin.

Yup had heard about bitlbee ...but it will still take me some time ..until then I need to use a GUI app (Oh how I hate saying that!!)

You can use bitlbee in a GUI IRC client, so it's only sort of CLI
And even if you decide to stay with Pidgin, I'd still get something similar, but different (Funpidgin, now Carrier). Pidgin is... Pidgin.

You know I might just dive into bitlbee and XChat and see how it goes. So tell me this, is it worth having your own bitlbee server or simply using the public ones is sufficient enough?
But nonetheless I will check out Carrier as well -- is it lighter than Pidgin?

I don't think so. If anything it's very slightly heavier - they enable features Pidgin devs decided were too complex for users (like resizing your own text boxes).
For bitlbee servers, I'd just use the bitlbee internal one unless I'm already running a server anyways that I can put bitlbee in.

have you tried out pidgin-light (http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=19673) or pidgin-mini (http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=20712)?
i'd be interested to know what you think, as i'll be wanting a lightweight chat program as well.

Pidgin-light wasnt very different than pidgin itself. I have not yet tried the mini.
EDIT : The mini simply doesnt install finch gtkspell and avahi which means it will take less disk space -- but memory consumption won't be that different
