Wireless network not responding after boot

So I have to think I'm missing something obvious with this one, but its cooking my noodle.  Did an update, it updated the kernel and wham, no wireless. OK.
Now I'm using ndiswrapper with a marvell libertas card, so I think perhaps it needs a re-modprobing, but the module is there--when I do:

ndiswrapper -l, it shows the driver installed and OK.  Good.

Next its  iwconfig, which also shows wlan0, but with no essid associated. Odd, as when I do an iwlist wlan0 scan, it shows my essid.  Nothing has changed in my rc.conf from update to reboot.

So I try to start it manually with an iwconfig wlano essid "myaccesspoint" key 12345etcetc and it seems to take.  I then do a dhcpcd wlan0 and it times out waiting for carrier.
Any ideas?  Simple as using a static address?  Is it DHCP or something else?
