I use Midori from git (2009-02-25), Midori is mostly slower than Firefox 3 on my system. The missing Adblock-like plugin keep me away from Midori right now.
Maybe I should give midori another try in future (it's soon I'm afraid)

i would use midori but every time i close it all my cookies get erased (meaning i have to enter in all of my usernames and passwords manually every time i close and reopen midor)

if i go into preferences and choose privacy tab, it wont even let me put a check in the box that says "remember last form input"

looks to me like its some simple fix, but for some reason its been like this for about 4 months and doesnt seem to be getting any attention

is this an issue that everyone is having?

or am i just missing something?

3 things keep me from using Midori

1) Speed Dial --- I know...but I have become so used to it in Firefox, that I can't do without it

2) Delicious plugin -- although this is not THAT important...I can always browse to the delicious page and add a bookmark

3) Webmail Notifier - I like the fact that I can keep track of my email without having to go to individual sites and logging in.

*AdBlock -- but i saw the post above and I guess you can have Adblock in Midori

If anyone knows of any solutions for the first 3, I would be really grateful because Firefox on my 256MB RAM machine is a bitch !!!

For nr. 3 - What about mail-notification ?

I tried installing mail-notification and it brings in a bunch of gnome-dependencies like gnome-keyring and gnome-desktop. I can do without it, thank you !!

Sorry if it's been said/asked already, but I'm getting an issue with Google's search results pages, where underlines *and* overlines appear over the page numbers and nearby nav-elements. Is this a webkit issue or a Midori one, and is it normal? It's the same with 0.12 and 0.13.

i tried out midori, but it keeps crashing on me. It couldn't even handle the iGoogle page, when I clicked on a tab which had a bunch of gadgets, it simply crashed and shutdown and this happened almost all the time.

I guess I will wait until it gets better.

I have tried midori and arora.

Arora was more stable but both programs crashed trying to use web mail services (example gmail, yahoo mail, etc)

The management of bookmarks (which is not part of webkit) is limited (especially on midori).

So I think they are programs potentially interesting but still not very usable.

You're missing something. You need the most recent version of libsoup. Just get the -svn version from aur and recompile midori, then the cookies will work.

I am now running an Arch install in VirtualBox at work (on Win XP host) and Firefox 3 is just a little bit too slow. Midori on the other hand is PERFECT! I just wish it had a Stumbleupon plugin lol

I personally love Midori and it looks really promising. However, it still crashes a lot, so I'll be using firefox until future releases. Can't wait until it's more stable though, it'll be my new full-time browser.

Why the fuck does Midori require Gstreamer?! I like to use as few redundancies as possible. The last thing I need is another audio framework.

Ehh... not a ton impressed with Midori. Granted it's still very new, but the speed isn't that much better than Firefox for me (subjective), it lacks all my awesome extensions, random crashes sometimes, the enhanced Gmail view broke a little while ago with it, and some oddities... it will sometimes spend more than half a minute trying to load a page, I'll F5, and boom. Or it just gets stuck on that page, and an hour later it works. Some images refuse to view, the subscriber-only pages on LWN give me a blank page rather than the normal asking for password (this happens other places too), etc.....

My bet right now is still on Chrome. Give it a Linux port (they're still working on it) and add extensions, and it'll be a competitor. Faster than Midori, and more stable/sane to boot.

I am always amazed by comments like these. When I run chrome in windows its really depressing when I come back to linux and firefox. The speed difference is pretty huge. The only firefox extension I use is flashblock. I'm really curious why some people don't see the speed gap that I see on my rig.

For casual users chrome may be better than firefox. But for those of us who have somewhere like 50+ tabs at a time it is not even a choice. I don't know about latest chrome, but when i tried it a some time back, after opening 20+ tabs there was no way to find out which tab was which.

On firefox, i close a tab with d, move along a page with space and j,k , move along tabs with ~, and open a new one with o or t . It makes browsing so much of a pleasure that i find it rather annoying when i have to type key-combos on other browsers

And adblock, flash block and noscript...do i need to say more

On the other hand, if one of my 50+ tabs crash in Chrome then only that tab is effected.
I've got nothing against firefox. I'm just glad there is some competition to light a fire under their....rears.
Its about time linux users have a legitimate choice when it comes to browsers. With all the new versions of webkit (midori, arora, chromium), gecko, and presto(opera) coming the future is definitely looking brighter.

That is for the html5 support. You can remove that depencendy by removing --enable-video in the build section

I noticed a huge speed difference when I got rid of Adblock Plus, and switched to privoxy.
I'm still torn between Midori and FF3-PGO, but Midori is ridiculously fast, and I haven't had any problems so far, java and flash have worked perfect.

midori: 0.1.5-1
libwebkit: 1.1.5-1
libsoup: 2.26.0-1

Edit:
Another plus for Midori is that I don't have to spend a long time compiling it twice from aur like ff-pgo on a netbook

it's not uncommon for me atleast to have 20+ tabs open when i'm just browsing, looking something up and leaving it open to look at later etc.

i tried midori but the lack of adblock made it not so enjoyable, i tried that script but it didnt seem to work at all for me, ads still showed up. i guess privoxy could be an alternative, but i recall it being a real pain to setup so i'm not too exited about trying it out. if they develop a adblock extention and it's way faster than firefox, i will switch for sure!

I don't know what privoxy was like in the past, but these days it's very easy to use:

# pacman -S privoxy

Then edit the config file /etc/privoxy/config by
changing

enable-edit-actions 0

(line 884 in section 4.5 in privoxy 3.0.12-1) to

enable-edit-actions 1

This allows you to change the settings through your browser rather than having to edit the text files.

Run

# sh /etc/rc.d/privoxy start

Then all you need to do is point your browser to that proxy (127.0.0.1:8118).
For midori the most convenient way is to set an environmental variable

http_proxy=http:///127.0.0.1:8118
https_proxy=http:///127.0.0.1:8118

You can put it in .bash_profile or .bashrc (I prefer profile).

Privoxy status checking and configuration can be done by going to http://config.privoxy.org/, or http://p.p/.

You can change how agressive the adblock is by clicking View & change the current configuration, and then the Edit button beside /etc/privoxy/match-all.action. The options are Cautious, Medium and Advanced.

If you need to direct your traffic through another proxy, you can get privoxy to forward to that proxy. Examples are given in section 5 (from line ~1057) such as

forward   /      proxy.server:port

this will forward all requests (on all ports) to the proxy.

Also for anyone who doesn't know, if you want privoxy to start automatically on boot, ou you need to add it to the daemons list in your /etc/rc.conf
