I just installed mpdscribble today for the first time and I am having the exact same problem.

Installed it yesterday, but it's working fine here. I do get the same "Handshake Failed" errors with shell-fm though, I'm wondering if it's maybe Last.FM's fault?

I gave up and switched to using lastmp from the lastfmsubmitd package instead. So far, this seems to work well for basic mpd scrobbling support.

it could be a problem with your time settings, i had the same problem with sonata, just installed openntpd and it works great:)

you might want to give Scrobby a try too, it's a nice little scrobbler written by the author of Ncmpcpp. Scrobby is available in the AUR.
