Corrupt Pacman Downloads when at Work?

This is a weird problem, and maybe it's karma (I guess I should be working at work? tongue ), but I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced it.

I have my netbook next to be at work, no big deal I play music on it and tinker sometimes. My employer really doesn't have a problem with this, so no worries, but I like to pacman -Syu, and everything I download while at work has serious corruption problems, except for when I use archlinux.org as the mirror!

I don't want to abuse the main mirror, and I'd like to have faster downloads (the network here at work is blazing fast) but I get weird corruptions otherwise...

It seems to improve a bit if I use wget as the xfercommand in pacman, but...it's not perfect. Could it just be a speed issue? Too fast and it gets corrupt? That is so weird. The network here at work is pure Windows, but that doesn't seem like it would be a problem...

Just wondering if anyone has seen anything like this before? I never have corrupt downloads on this same machine with my cable at home. Obviously this is not a super pressing issue, but mostly a curiousity.

Thanks! big_smile

weird, I would wager that it would have to be the speed since your files are not corrupting on the 50kb/s limmitted main mirror... just a  guess but if it is possible you could try and setup a QoS or bandwithl limmiter for your laptop or just the port pacman uses.

what kinda speed are we talking about? how fast do they download when you are off the main mirror?

Are you using any kind of proxy? Perhaps a transparent one that you don't even know about? Have you tried HTTP instead of FTP?

All good suggestions. Our internet here is pretty fast, like 2 megabytes a second, but not like out of this world. I doubt any of the mirrors are sustaining it back that fast...

I will try ftp and http, that's a good point see if I can rule one of them out.

I'll let you guys know, thanks!

You may want to try powerpill as well. I have found that it handles corruption a lot better by just redownloading the corrupted file over and over till it comes in right.

It may be the speed, and it may be a transparent proxy, or it may be the windows server messing with that port. Ask your network admin about it, they might know a solution, or at least a reason for the issue. Might want to figure out a way to make it sound work related though. A lot of company techs are touchy about helping with personal computers on their networks.

I keep getting distracted from my webserver project...

huh? oooh...  shiny!
