I followed the directions as stated here to get lighttpd working, but it doesn't seem to want to work. I made a basic html file and placed it in /srv/http/ to get it to show a page. When try to access both localhost and 127.0.0.1, and they come up with failed to connect message.
Another interesting tidbit: /etc/rc.d/lighttpd start seems to work, but when I try to run /etc/rc.d/lighttpd stop, it fails, and when I run /etc/rc.d/lighttpd restart, it says it can't stop it and just starts another copy of lighttpd. When I check htop for lighttpd, it isn't there. I even tried running the command manually and it says it works. Please help, I need to setup a local server for my parents.

check your logs. my bet is lighttpd isn't starting, due to a configuration error.
you try to start it, and i bet it is logging something, then killing itself off (since it couldn't parse the config file).
check /var/log/lighttpd* or whatever file it logs to.

Thanks. I had configured the fastcgi stuff incorrectly (I thought I followed the wiki, oh well).
