Router/server OS

I'm starting city wireless network, with few backbone PC's which will act as routers and one central server PC for internet connection.
So what do you think it is best? Linux on all machines (Arch) or some BSD? Or somewhere in the middle, GNU on top of BSD kernel?
Linux prons are better driver support and better packet manager, like packman and + I have much, much more xperience with linux.
But BSD prons is (as I've heard) that it is on network like fish in the watter. But worse driver support.

So, is it truth that BSD's are better for network solutions?
I still prefer linux, but will I have some performance drop if i use linux?

Re: Router/server OS

I would reccomend either pfsense (BSD) or the x86 version of OpenWRT, both are lightweight and made for the purpose of being a router/firewall trype system.

Good luck on your project.

Do you have xperience with such distros?

I've found this  http://gargoyle-router.com/index.php  project, something like openwrt clone. Like mint to ubuntu.
Tomorrow I will buy one Atheros base Siemens SE555 and test it on it.

Thanks smile

Re: Router/server OS

i've been running m0n0wall for a few years and found it to be quite good. pfsense is derivated from it (it has more features).
If you want something with a nice webinterface instead of a cli where you need to do at all, I would definitely try pfsense.

Re: Router/server OS

I think I'll go for openwrt cuz my router has only 2MB flash memory, i dont have much space for gui.
And maybe I'll learn more on cli, just like I learned more about linux with 2 weeks with arch and cli then one year on ubuntu.

@ ammon

I've used a few of the openWRT derrivatives but i hadnt heard of that one before, i'll probably check it out sometime soon.

You might want to look into DD-WRT as well, it has a pretty full featured GUI, and there is a micro version for rouers with only 2mb flash. I currently use it for my router, It is based on OpenWRT but a bit more of its own thing now. In the past i've worked with/help friends setup pfsense and openWRT a few times, they are all pretty great.
