I just spent last night on the phone with my daughter who was having the same problem mounting her usb key in gnome nautilus. I pointed her to the Hal wiki and walked her through the actual cli commands for her to create the /etc/hal/fdi/policy/preferences.fdi. She also had to comment out the line in her /etc/fstab for her usb stick. But that's just for stubborn usb automounting. There are other steps in the hal wiki concerning cd/dvd drives.
